Mic white noise
I work for a college where we have started recording podcast style lectures to offer our students. I’m pretty new to audio and have been trying to figure out how to eliminate some noises during recording. The only way I can describe it is kind of a white noise. It might just be the room we are recording in or maybe the mic is too hot. you can listen to a sample of it here. The file is titled test.wav. We are using a Shure SM7B connected to a Macbook Pro with a M-Audio firewire 410 and a PreSonus Eureka Pre-amp. I’ve used the suggested settings for vocal on the pre-amp but can’t seem to get rid of the noise.

This sounds like poor gain structure.
How do you have this stuff connected…..in what order?

I have the mic going into the Eureka Pre and then into the 410 into the Macbook Pro.

Forget that last question….it was stupid. I have been up since 3 am and my brain isn’t working too well. I hate early morning crew calls. 🙂
It still sounds like poor gain structure to me. Do you have the gain on the 410 cranked….or really low, so you have to crank up something else? The goal is to have all your gain stages working optimally.

I’ve tried it at different stages. Mainly it stays around 75% up on the 410 I would guess.

Try just plugging the mic in to the 410, lose the presonus. See what happens.

Thanx for all the posts so far. I have tried going straight into the 410 but we can’t get the volume levels we need using the SM7B. I do hear the noise when i crank the 410 alone as well. Not as much but it is there.

The SM7b is supposed to be worked closely, like 2-3 inches.
Where are you on it?

Yeah we have people right on it when we are recording. We couldn’t get much volume so we bought the Pre-amp on a suggestion from the audio guys at guitar center.

That ain’t right. (not doubting you, just sounds weird that it’s that low)
The M-audio 410 should have more poop than that.
What sort of cable are you using?

XLR cable not really sure what brand or anything. We only get around -24db max in Logic when going straight through the 410 at full gain.
