Audio Noise Reduction Software
Hi,
I am looking to purchase software to remove a humming noise from audio that was recorded elsewhere. I am 90% sure I am buying Bias SoundSoap Pro but would like to know if anybody has any other suggestions.

Hello Laura,
FCP suite’s NR in Soundtrack Pro is actually pretty good. There’s also IZotope Rx.

If you have not already purchased, also consider the WAVES Restoration Bundle. I have SS Pro and it is decent but the Waves bundle does a lot that SS Pro and Izotope don’t. More $$$ though.

Feature for feature, Izotope appears to have more options, but my Hollywood guys I have been interviewing for some articles swear that WAVES has more fine adjustment within it’s parameters, especially with broadband noise. They use it a lot.
I own SS Pro, it’s okay, but if you are not careful with tweaking it, it can make things sound metallic. I produced an A&E Biography with a lot of poor sounding sources from multi-generation Beta SP masters. I took a pass with SS Pro and made it sound what I thought was a lot better but then the sound designer did a pass with WAVES and it worked a lot better, especially in a scene with two actors standing in a heavy rain, whispering their lines to each other.
I will have to get a copy of Izotope, it is starting to build a buzz and looks very fully featured for the money.

Prolly cause the bundles are older.
iZotope’s RX is relatively new. Their hardware box is pretty happening if you want realtime NR.
Soundtrack Pro also has some significant NR stuff but you have to hunt for it.

It sounds like your working with a Mac. This may sound funny to some of you but if you have a PC with the old Cool Edit 1.0 there is a noise reduction that works better than any other I’ve tried. You need to have an area of the wave where is just the noise, hum for it to work. but you will be pleasently suprised by it. Danny Hays

I also like the waves restoration bundle, especially X-noise.
