  Voice-Over Pre

  Hi Peter,Steve, and Ty

  Iam upgrading my voice over studio and am contemplating an Avalon 737
  as the primary Mic-Pre. i have no first hand experience of this box and wondered
  if any of you have had any. Also what is your personal favorite.Any feedback would be helpful

  That’s a nice pre. It’s used by alot of Hip Hop and R&B artists these days. It’s got a nice tube sound to it, a good compressor, but the eq is lacking a bit. And it gets real hot!

  Hi,

  I don’t have a favorite. Here or at other good studios I’ve been recorded over a dozen or more good pres. The Avalon should be OK.

  My preference is for mostly colorless pres.

  I’ve used the Millennia HV-3C a number of times for ADR. It’s a stereo pre and is known for it’s transparency. If you can find a dealer who will agree, try to borrow 2 or 3 pres and decide which one you like.

  I work on 737s every day and recommend them whole-heartedly. They don’t have a transparent sound by any means, but if you’re going to record VOs, you’ll probably be processing your sound to get somewhere in the 737 vicinity anyhow. The compressor is really nice and can go choppy or smooth without a hitch. The EQ works for broad strokes, which is what you want from a preamp anyways. You can sculpt later on, in the box.

  I’ve tested many competing preamps, including the Millenia range, when opening new rooms and I always end up going for the Avalon in the end. They’ve got a lot of gain, too, which is useful if you have a broad range of mics. I think you can tell I like my Avalons 😛
