old but not that old
Posted by Willie Bobo on November 26, 2019 at 6:28 pmProfessionally, I retired several years ago but still do some editing.
I haven’t upgraded since Pro 12 but occasionally have problems with mp4s.
Sometimes I can add them to the timeline with no problem and at other times Vegas doesn’t recognize them with no reason as to why (just file can not be added).
Any idea as to what the issue might be?
Thanks,

November 26, 2019 at 6:38 pmThe issue is the source of those mp4’s.
Vegas 12 is a bit dated and needs to be upgraded to be friendly with the current flavors of mp4’s.Steve Rhoden (Cow Leader)

November 26, 2019 at 6:46 pmSo the mp4s of today are different than the mp4s of 5 years ago?
I would be curious as to how…I mean looking at the properties of the source video it looks no different than a 1080p mp4 (29.97 fps, 48k audio).
I used to buy every release of Vegas (also a beta tester) but I can’t justify upgrading for fun.
Is there no other workaround (process thru another app 1st or something)?
Thanks Steve,

November 26, 2019 at 8:27 pmHi Randy
There are many different ”types” of files that can be in the .MP4 container. The container format is based on the Apple Quicktime format, also known as .MOV
Take a look at the the links below. I know, it’s a smidge technical but well worth the read.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_video_container_formats
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MPEG-4
When one realizes (as I did a while back) that containers such as .MP4s are just that, containers, you stop taking files at face value.

November 26, 2019 at 8:36 pmSo do you think it’s safe to say I won’t have this issue if I go ahead and upgrade?
Thanks,

My advice is to download the trial version, try it out before buying it. Have a go at it. Then you can make an enlighten decision.
Happy editing !

November 27, 2019 at 1:50 amDoubt you will have those issues after upgrading to Vegas Pro 17.
All mp4’s that comes to me from many different sources are all easily handled by Vegas.
So, as advised, give the trial a run and see!Steve Rhoden (Cow Leader)
