How can I clean up audio like this? (Crackling from high volume)
Posted by Morgan Lewis on June 2, 2019 at 9:28 pmI edit a podcast kinda thing, and one of our people has a different mic now which is kinda sensitive and results in crackling when she gets too loud, she tries not to obviously but I’m now stuck with some nasty audio everynow and then to try and make sound nice.
I’ve attached an example. : 13392_crackles.mp3.zip
I’m using Vegas Pro 10, I’m not overly familiar with audio enhancements in the program, I hope there’s something I can use by splitting the audio on each side and applying something to it?

I don’t think you’ll be able to save this. It over-modulated to much when it was recorded. I tried running it thru 3 different audio software and while I could reduce the crackling by a smidge, it altered the voice too much. If it had been the other way ’round, one could perform some magic. But in this case, you need a miracle. My best advice is to re-record making sure to keep a close eye on your recording levels meters.
Cheers !

June 3, 2019 at 4:23 amThanks for trying some things, unfortunately re-recording isn’t really an option, would you suggest anything to… soften it at least? If it can’t be removed without destroying the voice line, it would be nice to at least make it so it’s less harsh on the ears.
Vegas’s inbuilt things preferred but I don’t mind using audacity or something.

I do not know a free audio plug-in for VEGAS Pro to fix clipping sound but instead you might want to try a free audio editor “AUDACITY”.

Good luck.

I am curious to know why that clip can’t be re-recorded, either by yourself or someone else.
You could technically get rid of most of your noise but it would take so much time to do that it wouldn’t economically sound and worth the time and effort to do it unless you had a clip of, let’s say, Shakespeare reading Hamlet…
And for others reading this post at some point, I can’t stress enough the importance that your audio, all and any of it, has in the final ”look” of your project. I’ve seen too many great visual stories wither because of sub-par audio quality, bad music track choice, wrong voice for the narration, poor delivery, etc…
Choose your material according to your recording environnement. Whether it be microphones, recording unit, pop and wind screens, etc… If you’re going to spend all that time on making it look good, make sure that your audio won’t distract your viewers and send them running after 2 seconds.
Cheers !

Hi Morgan! I used iZotope RXAdv6 to get this:
I could do more to make it more “pleasant” to listen to.
