Two video tracks; when one speeds up, it makes the other choppy after render
Hey all!
So I had upgraded to VP 15. I may have not set my preferences right, because it has been a long while since I had to do them for the previous version I had…
I create Let’s Plays on YouTube, using VP to edit them. I have one video track being the game, and the other being my face (narration). I have to record them separately (doing a post-narration), because I’m currently doing a PS2 game, and have a resolution upscale device for it, however, it makes recording both off-synch when done together (my theory is that the device has to slow down the game in parts to get the resolution up). Anyway, so I do a post-face recording after I have edited the game footage in Vegas – record my narration/face while watching the edited video. The face video alone comes out great, but when I add it to Vegas, any area I have the game speed up, it makes my face video very choppy. Even after rending, when the game speeds up, the game looks fine, but the face video is still choppy.
I tried emailing the Vegas support team, but that was a while back, and I have not heard anything from them yet. I have also posted a link to a video with the issue, so it could hopefully be easier to understand. It starts around 4:05.
Also, here is a screenshot of my video preferences.

Hi Philip,
How about a screenshot of your Project Properties and Render Format Template? Also, using the free Mediainfo app (in text mode) post a screenshot of the specs of your game footage source media and your face video source media files that you are putting into Vegas.

What you posted is precisely what I asked for, Thank You. I see nothing wrong with your Project or Render template, although whenever I see problems with Magix AVC – AMD VCE, I switch to Magix AVC – Mainconcept AVC, just as a test to make sure it is nothing that the GPU is doing.
Your source media also looks good and the only difference I see is the game source is 59.940 fps and the face source is 60.0 fps, but that is not going to cause the difference you are describing.
I think it maybe something you are doing in your work flow, can you tell us something about how you are putting the clips on the timeline, tracks and speeding up the game footage? If when you speed up the game footage it is somehow linked (grouped) to your face footage this could be a cause, although I’m trying to think how you could have done something that would have caused this and really cannot think of anything!
How about muting out the game footage track and rendering out just the face footage. Do you see the same issue in around that 4:05?
We may need you to post somewhere your project.veg file so we can download it and take a look. The .veg file is rather small and will not include any of your video clips.

I’ll try changing it to the Mainconcept AVC and check that out.
I did try rending out just the game video, then making a new project with that full video, and then putting my face video to that, but it still did that same thing, just on the sped up parts.
Here’s a screenshot of my work:
I only group my face video and the red solid color (face video frame) together (of course with the VO audio track). The game video only stays grouped with it’s audio. I also used a volume audio envelope on the game audio track. For both game and face video tracks, I disabled resamples, too.
As for posting the files… Not quite sure how I’d do that. :/

UPDATE: I tried rendering out a small section of it with both the normal and sped up segments with Mainconcept, but it still did the same thing. 🙁

I may be repeating myself here…..
Mute everything accept the game video and it’s audio track. Render this out. Bring it back into your project to replace the original.
– or/and –
Mute the problem event in track 3 where you have speeded up the event, render out with that section muted and see if you have a different result.
There is something I think simple right in front of our eyes, but I’m unable to pick it out!!!
As for the files, we don’t need any of the source media files just the LCS_063.veg file. Can you upload that so I can download it and take a look. I will use my own source media files.

Yeah, I guess I just worded it differently, so sorry about that! But yeah, I rendered out the game video after the edits, and what I did was just upload that to a new project, and then put my face video overlay to the new (edited, then rendered) game video. Either way, it did not work.
But ok, here’s the 063 file:

OK, two things you should consider:
1] Unckeck your GPU.
2] Your Media has a Variable BitRate.
Do a new SEPARATE Project with your GPU off and NEW Media which is CONSTANT BitRate.

1] I went to the video preferences and turned the GPU acceleration off.
2] Went to the render settings and with Mainconcept selected, chose a constant bitrate of 20m.
I hope that’s what you were meaning. ☺ As for a new project, should I just try to start the next video by editing it in such a way?

Hi Phil,
I downloaded the veg file, Thank You for posting. I used my video clips (1080-59.940p) from a GoPro Here3. First I muted all the sections you had increased the speed, then rendered out to 1080-59.940p using Magix AVC-AMD VCE and I could not detect any choppy movement in the P-n-P track which was your face video.
Then I un-muted all the section you have increased the speed (fast motion), and render it to 1080-59.940p using Magix AVC-AMD VCE, and again I can not detect any choppy movement in the clip I substituted for your face video!!
Looking over your project I cannot find anything incorrect that would be causing your issue. And I have failed to replicate your issue using your project file! This would pretty much point to something different in our systems.
As Graham has suggested, it may be fruitful to start another test project, using your source media from this problem project using the same work flow of different section in fast motion to see if you can duplicate your issue.
Have you performed a full reset of Vegas Pro 15? Hold down the ‘Ctrl+Shift’ keys while you double left click on the VP15 desktop shortcut. Then check the box ‘Delete all cached application data’, then left click on ‘Yes’
