¿Pan/crop Lags? I want to improve my vegas experience
Hello everyone.
I have been editing with Sony Vegas for years, maybe 4 or 5. I’m used to the lags / slow rendering when I’m working with long footage, but I really want to impove it now, as I’m working as an editor and I could edit faster if I optimice some settings, I’m sure.
I assume I’m having a bottleneck issue somewhere on my laptop, or there is something I can change to make it work properly, because my laptop has good specs and I should’t have problems while editing. I don’t really mind the rendering time as I do other things while I’m rendering. The problem is that I don’t want to deal with lags while I’m editing.
The main problems I have are this ones:
When I select the opcion pan/crop, or when I insert a new effect, or when I create a new text, my computer takes 4-5 seconds to open each window with the details of the effect, the pan/crop view, etc. It freezes for 5 secs and then it shows the view. Also: When I create new frames in the pan/crop event, sometimes it works smooth, some times it takes ages to render while I’m moving the frame dots to find a particulary spot. So this ends up on me guessing where the dots should be without even checking, then CLOSING the pan/crop view because I can’t see anything if that view is open ( The sound works ok, but the video frame doesn’t change, so I must close the pan/crop to see the video. this is painful aswell) and then watching If my guess was ok. If not, I have to open the pan/crop view again and replace the dots… ugh.
Important Note: When I switch off and then turn on the computer, and open a new sony vegas project, it usually works smooth for the first 10-15 mins. Then all the problems start to happen again. So that’s why I think I have a bottleneck issue or something not related with Vegas, I don’t know.
My specs: my laptop is MSI GL73 8RD. Basically it has 512 gb ssd, 1 TB Hdd, 16gb Ram(wanna improve this to 32gb in a few days…), 1050 gtx ti , i7-8750H 2.20 Ghz, windows 10.
Also! I’m using Sony Vegas 15.
TLDR: If you ever had lags in sony vegas while opening pan/crop event and creating/moving frame dots, and you fixed it, tell me how 🙁 -

First off: Do you really have to work with a laptop ? If you are thinking about spending any significant length of time editing, you may want to look into getting a desktop. Granted, there are some powerful laptop out there but for the same money, you get more out of a desktop. I also use a laptop but only when I am out in the field and want to cut a rough edit. Vegas Pro is very CPU intensive, more so than RAM. Laptops are notorious for over heating and when that happens, performances drop. Also, your best bet is to get a computer that is more workstation focused than gaming oriented.
Don’t get me wrong, there are some great editing laptops out there…but they do come at a cost.

Yes, definitly Vegas takes a lot of CPU. I set it to use the 12 logical processors I have and I even reach 90-100 % CPU when I’m doing stuff. I’m aware of this and I’m saving money for my future PC. This laptop I’m using is brand new, and that’s why I’m using it, it is way better than my desktop one, but eventually I’ll use my laptop just for programming and I’ll use a better PC for editing.
Anyways! This laptop is really strong (games run soooo good) and I really think I can find a way to make it work and deal with 10-30 min videos which don’t really have much “effects” or heavy things. The videos I usually do only have zooms, sfx and millions of cuts :’) . My goal is always make them as fast as possible. So that’s why I’m looking forward a better experience with Vegas, so I don’t get mad and quit everytime it goes slow.

Where is your source media coming from? Can you post a screenshot of your source media from Mediainfo (in text mode)?

I do have an HDD and a SSD.
Vegas is installed in the SSD. I usually store all the footage in my HDD, but whenever I have to edit a video, I have a folder in my C:\ directory called videos_to_edit (C:\ is a partition of the ssd) and I move the videos there, then I drag then into the Vegas Timeline.
I heard that is better to have one SSD for Vegas and another SSD for the media files, but I don’t have 2 SSDs. Anyways, here you have the screenshot! (I hope you can click it and zoom it too see everything). Thanks for helping
