Analogue to digital artefact – Can Sony Vegas remove it?
Hi,
I was using Sony Vegas 13 Pro to edit some old analogue tape footage which had been converted to DVD using an old Philips DVD recorder.
I can import the. VOB files (720×576@25fp/s) from the DVD into Vegas and render them to .MP4 ok.
The only problem encountered so far is that there’s a small thin vertical blue line on the right hand side of every video, which is presumably some kind of artefact resulting from the analogue to digital conversion. It’s present in the unrendered .VOB files and the rendered .MP4 files.
Can this line be got rid of in Vegas?

I think not. I think that was most likely baked in during capture and has only reaveled as a result of Under Scanning or Overscanning somewhere in Transfer. If I look closely I can see that that blue line has “bled” into the footage. This implies it’s now part of the Video. Can you get back to the original and confirm either way? I suppose one way to reduce its appearance is to make a blurred frame or vignette all the way around. You could also try a couple of zoom in pixels widths to see. But you’ll get a softening. Also it’s possible you’ve got a tiny bit of Pan going on. Lastly, the Protected Video Frame area may just be over-zealous, and you could readjust to cut out the Frame.

I had a lot of this with old V8 tape converted to digital, I did a very small event crop to remove.

How do you do that in Vegas?

Just select the pan/crop icon thats on every event and adjust the crop amount accordingly. You can then use the option to copy and paste the event attributes to any and all remaining events that have a similar issue. You probably knew all of this already, I may have not made it clearer in my ist. post, best of luck.

The tapes I captured were originally shot in the early eighties, I transferred them using a fairly average hi8 camcorder, but I am guessing its simply caused by age, captured about 2003.

The line is not present when the original analogue tape is viewed on a TV screen, but only appears after transfer to DVD. I’m just a casual user of Sony Vegas so hadn’t used pan/crop before.
I’ll give it a go and sees if I can work out how to do it. Thanks.
