  • how to create a smooth, slow movement between two masks of the same image?

Posted by Michael Leibson on September 2, 2018 at 5:21 pm

I keep thinking that I’ve done this before, but I can’t remember how!

For a particular still image, I would like to begin with its full size, and then slowly and progressively show less and less of that image. To do this, I went to the track’s Pan/Crop –> mask, and — at the beginning of the timeline — created a mask that includes the entire image. Then, five seconds later on the timeline, I added a new mask keyframe, in which I edited the original mask so that only the left half of the image is visible. I thought that Vegas would create a slow, steady movement between the two keyframed masks, but it simply showed only the second of the two masks, even when playing from the beginning of the track.

I then re-created the situation, but this time adding many keyframes, very close together, in which I changed the mask’s size in very small increments, and this did give me a smooth transition between the full and half images, respectively.

Is there a way of obtaining the results I seek when using only two — a beginning and an end– keyframes?

Thanks, in advance, for any tips you’d care to share!

    Hi Michael,

If I understand you correctly, two keyframes is all you should need. It works smooth for me. You might want to start clean with a new project and perhaps do a full reset of Vegas. There may be something in the cached application data that is causing Vegas to misbehave. Hold down the ‘Shift+Ctrl’ keys then double left click on the Vegas Pro desktop icon. Before clicking on ‘Yes’ check the box ‘Delete all cached application data’ . This will delete the un-needed cached application data that sometimes will build up and confuse Vegas and also reset Vegas to the original setup when installed.

BTW, although haven’t tried, Track Motion may be another tool for this job depending on the exact results you are seeking.

    Best Regards……George

Thanks for taking the time to help, Dean — I appreciate it!

It must be something like what you suggest, because — after vainly trying very simple attempts in a number of new, separate files — I’ve found that it is working now (for some reason that I don’t understand!), even tho’ I hadn’t yet read your reply. Something must have re-set. . .

    Thanks again!

Glad you got it working Michael. Sometimes just shutting down and starting back up will set things straights.

    Best Regards……George
