I’m curious about this disk & it’s codec
I’m curious about knowing whats going on with a DVD I recently saw. I was under the impression that all DVD’s where encoded as MPEG2 then PAL or NTSC with a few different frame sizes from which to select from. These were supposed to be the only disks that could play on a DVD player & could come with multiple audio tracks,subtitles & chapter menus.
The disk I had been lent would not play in one DVD player but would in another as well as on the PC. I was curious as to why one would not play on one player so I looked at files on PC. In stead of MPEG2 the files turned out to be made with a codec I was unaware of MPGV which is apparently is something from Apple. It have the menus’, chapter selections, as well as both audio & subtitle choices.
The video content didn’t look too bad especially since the playing time was perhaps twice what MPEG2 would give you.
Is this a codec that Vegas Pro & or DVDA could use?

What is the format of the DVD (PAL or NTSC) and what do the DVD players support (PAL or NTSC)? Some PAL players support NTSC, some do not. I don’t know of any NTSC players that support PAL and the PC supports anything.

I have had many DVD players since they were introduced here in OZ decades ago. Even though I have had Sony, Nation-Panasonic,Akai & Samsung stand alone players as well as 2 built into my PVR’s I have never encountered any that could not play both PAL & NTFS. The only time I had anything to do with NTFS was when relatives visited down under & I shot a video for them which I rendered out using Vegas as NTFS for use Canada & this copy to would play on any machine I wanted.
Perhaps its all about the control that the large companies try to put in place for releasing new videos in different countries. I have played DVD’s on my PC & only once have I been asked if I wished to set the player to a different zone. So maybe this sort of DVD would play in North America if they had imported their DVD player from elsewhere in the world instead of purchasing NTFS only machines.

I forgot to attach file information from DVD. I opened the disk on PC using VLC player then asked for the details.

Resolution 720×480
Display resolution 720×480
Frame Rate 29.70029Audio Codec A52 Audio (aka AC3) (a52)
This followed with subtitle data etc
The resolution & frame rate suggests to me its NTFS

If the DVD has a country code specified it would only play in players that support that code so that could be the problem.

Me too. That’s definitely an NTSC DVD. Like you said, it may be a country code limitation.
