Can Sony Vegas export to analog outputs on an analog capture device?
Hi all,
I have a few years of experience with Sony Vegas but am new to capturing from analog sources. I have obtained three analog capture devices: a Canopus DVStorm, a Matrox RTX100 and a Pinnacle Systems Bendino v1.0a. I want to get some clarification about whether Vegas could pass both previews and renders of projects to the analog outputs of these capture cards. Now I know that printing to tape is not a thing these days but I want to intentionally get the authentic analog tape look for some projects.
So far I know that Pinnacle Studio can export to analog output. Is this possible to do in Vegas? If not, besides Pinnacle Studio, are there other programs which can pass PC video output (e.g. video signal of the graphics card) to the analog outputs of these capture cards?

(Currently I am trying the Bendino where capture can be done in Virtualdub but not Sony Vegas’ capture program. The output seems to be limited to Pinnacle Studio…)

I don’t believe that Vegas Pro is designed to work with any of these cards as far as output from the preview is concerned.
I use a Canopus ADVC-300 to output to Analog Tape with Sony Vegas Pro. The ADVC-300 presents itself to Vegas as a firewire device so Vegas thinks it’s printing back to DV digital tape via firewire and then the ADVC-300 converts the digital signal to analog for any analog tape device that you choose to connect to it. Your device would need to do something similar. My experience with Pinnacle devices is that they only work with their software.
Vegas Pro can also print to tape via SDI/HDMI using the Blackmagic Design DeckLink HD Extreme/Intensity Pro/HD Extreme 3D, AJA Io Express, and AJA KONA LHi cards. I don’t believe the Matrox RTX100 is supported. That leaves the Canopus DVStorm as your best choice if it works at all.

Thanks for the confirmation. I have heard you mention about your Canoupus ADVC-300 before, I have been going on a search for one myself too, but getting it shipped across the globe is prohibitive for me. There were one or two ADVC-100s and ADVC-55s before but I wasn’t too sure if it worked like the ADVC-300. Would the ADVC-55 or ADVC-100 perform dual-way conversion like your ADVC-300? Also, do you know if there are cards that can do the same thing as the ADVC range?I hope the Canopus DVStorm isn’t shot as I have tried installing that card on different Windows XP configurations and the drivers wouldn’t install properly. I probably have to find a configuration from the “Pentium 4” era to make it work.

The ADVC-55 is one way in. You can ingest analog footage but you can’t print back to tape. The ADVC-100 is dual conversion (ingest and print) but doesn’t have the Time Base Corrector (TBC) and the ADVC-300 is basically the ADVC-100 + TBC. Considering that stand alone TBC’s are $200+ it’s not a bad deal.

The Blackmagic Design Intensity has a Windows version that uses USB 3.0. It doesn’t work with Dell computers and has very stringent motherboard requirements but if your motherboard meets the specs, that is a possible solution. According to their web site:

So that looks like it should get the job done.

This is why I never liked internal cards. All of my solutions for both audio and video capture are external devices that are independent of your computer. Of course they are all firewire and my last PC motherboard had no firewire so I had to buy a separate card for it, but both of my Mac Pro’s have firewire so I can still support these devices.

Thanks for the insight, all three boards have FireWire/IEEE1394 inputs but I’m putting money on it that I would have to buy a separate FireWire card anyway.

I just discovered that my Pinnacle Bendino and RT.X100 card ignores Macrovision, would that mean the ADVC-100 wouldn’t be able to record from Macrovision-protected media without the TBC? -

I don’t know. I only have the ADVC-300 but it doesn’t have problems with Macrovision-protected media.
