  • Finding media in Project Explorer + Trimmer editing

    Hi Everyone,

I have a couple of questions. Would greatly appreciate someone taking the time to answer any or all of the below. 🙂

    Question 1

I’m trying to get in the habit of selecting media from the project explorer instead of File > Open. When I get to the folder I want to select my videos from however, I can’t actually see the media.

For example, if you look at the attached image. I have navigated to the folder, “Videos”, however I can’t see the media in this folder to select. I’ve tried double clicking and what not. Do you know how to display the window that shows all the media?

    Question 2

Here’s a question for the trimmer users out there (there doesn’t seem to be many!). I wish to move away from performing my initial editing in the timeline. For me, it becomes too messy with the volume of footage I have. What I want to start doing is using the trimmer to create sub-clips (highlights), which I can then enter into my timeline as and when I see fit. The functionality to do this though seems extremely poor…

I watch the footage in the trimmer, then when I see a highlight, I create a set-in point, playing until the end of the highlight, after which I create a set-out point. I then hit “Create Subclip”, which puts the hightlight into the project media. So far so good! This is when my troubles arise though. One of two things happen:

    1. After I’ve created the sub-clip, I want to keep playing my footage from where that previous highlight just FINISHED. Every time I press play again though, it plays from the START of the highlight I just created. This leads to me re-watching every sub-clip, which is a huge waste of time. Is there a way that, once I’ve created a sub-clip in the trimmer, I can remain watching my footage from where that sub-clip has ended?

    2. After I’ve created the sub-clip, when I click play again in the trimmer (or press enter) it only plays the sub-clip I’ve just created, then stops.

I don’t think it’s much to ask to be able to create a sub-clip, then continue watching your original footage in preparation of the next sub-clip to create an eventual group of highlights. It doesn’t seem easy to do though?

Any help is hugely appreciated. Thanks again.

    Hi Jamie

In relation to the second of your two questions you may like to look at this thread. I asked a similar question to yours and the responses were pretty interesting. Makes for good reading. But basically, we are stuck with what you have identified as the trimmer process (maybe – never say never of course.

Oh, and not sure if you know this, but after creating I and O points, just enter A and the trimmed clip is inserted onto your timeline. Another keyboard shortcut of which there are many!

    Good luck.

Definitely some useful information in the other thread, thanks.

I think I’ve found the solution to my second question. Once I create a subclip in the trimmer, I then click alt + right arrow to move to the frame following the subclip I’ve just created. I can then hit enter and keep playing my footage without having to re-watch anything. I’m amazed I need to do this though. Is there nothing in preferences to allow me to continue playing my footage from the frame following the subclip I’ve just created?

And of course the problem then becomes, you cannot extend a subclip in the timeline. This would mean when I see a clip I might consider using, I would need to select a little bit of extra footage on either side. It all seems a bit non-user-friendly to be honest. 🙁

Surely there has to be a way that I can store sub-clips in the Project Media window that I can also extend and shorten if need be when I get them on the timeline… Because of the editing I do I need all my sub-clips created before I begin editing. Editing footage and having subclips at the end of the timeline is not an option either as it just gets messy scrolling back-and-forth. You also end up deleting clips by accident when you’re ctl+z’ing so much!

Thanks for the tip about the tab-R key.
I did wonder what, or rather why, you meant by ‘create subclip’. I know what the term means and do sometimes create a subclip on the timeline for certain purposes but, when using the trimmer (hitting the I and O keys) I simply hit the A key which adds the selected region onto the timeline. This ‘region’ can then be extended if needs be right there on the timeline.
I may well be missing something here since I rarely have a need to create a subclip but I notice in the Help sections it does say (in answer to your last para.) –
If you want to open the original media file that was used to create the subclip in the Trimmer, right-click an event on the timeline (or a subclip in the Project Media window) and choose Open Parent Media in Trimmer from the shortcut menu.

So keep on experimenting! As we all do. LOL

    Thanks Phil.

I just don’t like using the A key to insert straight to the timeline. A lot of my editing is putting video to a soundtrack already in the timeline. If I go straight from the trimmer into the timeline then it’s hard to judge the correct amount of video needed in each section to properly fill the soundtrack. It’s just easier to pick and choose pre-edited clips.

Do you have any idea about my explorer issue and not being able to see the media in the folder?

    Thanks!

Looks like you have somehow ‘slid’ your directory’s first level of folders across the whole window. Just hover your mouse over the far right edge of your explorer window (in Vegas of course) until you get the double-ended arrow and then drag the edge to the left to see the folder’s contents. You may also need to click on the small down-ward arrow next to the view selection button (looks like a blue grid) and select ‘All files’. Shouldn’t need to but may reveal more.
    Hope this helps.
