  • Sound driver “does not exist” error, only when rendering large files

Posted by Chris Lohr on February 7, 2012 at 5:04 am

Hello, this is my first post here.

I’ve been trying to render a large file, but when I make it large enough, Vegas gives me the error, “Microsoft Sound Mapper does not exist”. I have tried Direct Sound and Windows Classic Wave Driver, and they all pop up an error saying they don’t exist.

This error only pops up after the video is nearly finished rendering. The source videos play absolutely fine, both in Vegas and in my PC’s regular video players. They also render perfectly, as long as I only render a small bit at a time (like 1 minute or so). This error definitely only pops up when I try to render a lot at once.

    Specifics:
-I am rendering as a Photo JPEG mov file. This is necessary, because it is the only format that allows full unrestricted editing in Ableton Live. The resolution is 1920×1080, so if I were able to render the full 19 minutes, it would come out to be a rather large file – like 20GB or so? I can’t guess, since it keeps giving me this error.
-The audio is rendered as Uncompressed, sample rate 44100, bit depth 16. These are the same settings that I have my audio device set to (44100, 16 bit).
    -Windows 7, 64-bit. Sony Vegas 32-bit, Vegas Pro 10.

Thank you for any help that you can provide. I will provide any other details that would help you to understand my problem.

EDIT: I have changed many of my settings, upped my audio device to 48000, and now the error I receive is no longer that my sound driver doesn’t exist. Now, the error is “The file could not be created”, yet the progress bar reached all the way to 100%. When I tried to play the project in the Preview window, it was flashing red, rather than playing the video, but the audio came through clear. As before, if I restart Vegas, it works perfectly again.

I certainly have enough disk space for the size that I am attempting to render. (And yes, I know that to render this, I actually need 2x the final file size, and I do have much more than that free).

It still renders small sections of the video perfectly.

This person had the same problem as me, but didn’t share their solution:

However they were saving uncompressed, while I am saving as Photo JPEG.
    My volume is NTFS.
