  • Differences between Movie Studio HD & Vegas Pro?

I’m doing some basic web video for a non profit, and the marketing guy, recently out of college, has basic video editing skills. I shot a 20 minute video of various bands performing yesterday, and both of us realize we’d prefer a 5 to 10 minute sampler video. He would like to take my video and make the cuts himself to make it shorter (I’m all in favor of that!). Question:
I edited in Vegas Pro 10.d. I used Protitler to make the titles. If I give him the project footage and project file, can he open it and make basic edits in MS HD? I can assume you can upgrade and I can edit his stuff he might give me, but can he open my projects?

Any words of wisdom here on this?

By the way, the Sony sponsored forum appears to have been hacked and high jacked. Sony really has to get their security improved! I’m available to them for a reasonable hourly! (G)

I see an earlier post here that Mike states that Vegas 10 projects won’t open in Studio, yet the poster says they have been able to do that. Does anyone know the facts? Can a 10.d project (.veg) open in HD even if it converts the timeline? That’s sort of what we want to do.

If in fact I need to do the simpler stuff on Studio, I suppose I can. It’s pretty cheap software. But would rather stay on pro, for obvious reasons.

Also, how much RAM should my buddy buy for Studio HD? Is the package 64 bit yet? And also, important fact, can he edit canon MXF files off a xf305? I assume studio will handle 4:2:2. Is that a good bet? (maybe I should just download the trial, but figured someone here my have some local knowledge before I waste a bunch of time.)

To answer your original question, the differences are on the Sony Product Comparison page.

[Al Bergstein] “I see an earlier post here that Mike states that Vegas 10 projects won’t open in Studio, yet the poster says they have been able to do that. Does anyone know the facts?”

The facts are that it doesn’t work, i.e., you cannot open Pro projects with Movie Studio but you can open Movie Studio projects with Pro. Someone hacked their .veg file with a hex editor to change the version number in it and renamed it .vf and was able to open it in Movie Studio. This is probably what you heard but is totally unsupported and I would not use this with a client.

Since you used the ProType Titler and it only exists in the Pro version, your client wouldn’t be able to use your projects even with the hack.

[Al Bergstein] “Also, how much RAM should my buddy buy for Studio HD? Is the package 64 bit yet?”

Movie Studio is still 32-bit so it can only use 2GB of memory max.

If your client wants to play with a professional editor, he needs to buy professional tools. Otherwise, he should let you handle the editing.

Yes, I saw the differences on the Sony page, but wanted to see if there was stuff that maybe wasn’t so clear, such as the hex hacking (G). And since the Protitler is available only on Pro, it points to the fact that they should just pay up and get it. If they could have saved some money, they would have liked that. I’m not really interested in downgrading for one client, unless there was some fun consumer things in it, like in iMovie, which has a very nice trip mapping animation. Put in two coordinates and the animation draws a circumnavigation around the globe. Simple but effective.

    Thanks for your feedback.

Nope, it’s just less function than Vegas Pro and you’d be surprised how you would miss simple Vegas Pro functions like Masking which isn’t available in Movie Studio. There’s really nothing in it for you.
