I was going to upload a screen shot but apparently this software does not allow to paste a picture. Neither does it seem to support bmp or gif files so I’ll will try to describe the problem. I want to add a second sound track to the first one which is background music. Obviously I need to keep the levels in proper perspective. Playing it back in vegas 9 I can reduce the output level of the background music to hear the narrative on the second track. But if I render program wont the background music track overwhelm the narrative track which if much less volume than the music track? A screen shot would make this much easier. I even thought I had inserted a screen shot in one of my posts but I don’t know what happened. Maybe because the file was either bmp or gif was the reason it would not paste.

    Have a nice day.

What you hear is what you get. If you adjust the level of the background audio (via gain or by inserting and adjusting a volume or envelope (or limiter or compressor or …), then what you hear s/b the same as the rendered version. You can always select a short portion to render and hear how the final will sound.

OK, The level of the background music is ok except it is too loud when I talk. From your description then it is either or. No way to just reduce the background when I talk then bring it up when I am not talking. Right? If I am right then there is one level all the time. This is ok but not as good as reducing it when I talk only.

Very quick response: One option is to insert a volume envelope (click on track automation icon?). This will let you vary the background volume during specific times. More info in the manual.

    I agree with Walker.
Volume envelopes are the easiest way to do this.
Click on an audio track to highlight it, press V and you’ll see a thin blue line running the entire length of the track.
Double click to add nodes (points) and adjust up or down as desired.
