  • Problem with deleting frames.

Posted by Sam Hasser on August 23, 2010 at 5:17 pm

I am VERY new to Sony Vegas… a few days ago. I’ve tried to place a clip in the trimmer window then take a piece and transfer it to the timeline …no problem with that. Problem is … when I expand the clip to try to find a particular frame in order to blur a face, frames which were in the original clip …ones I didn’t include in the piece taken down to the timeline are still there. I’ve tried to do it by using ‘S’, separating the full clip on the timeline into two parts and then deleting the second part. But then when I expand to try to find a particular frame, frames which were supposed to be deleated still show up.

What do you mean when you say “expand”?

By ‘expand’ I mean when I grab the right end of the clip taken down to the timeline ie the visible frame and pull it to the right to see the thumbnail versions of the frames in the clip. I see frames which I assume were left up in the trimmer section.

Sam, I was afraid you were going to say that.
The moment you pull (drag) the new clip out, you no longer have the original clip there.
Let’s see if I can explain this easily.
You have a clip that goes 1234567890.
In the trimmer, you choose 4567 and drag that to the timeline.
As soon as you pull it to the right, you’re going to see 8 and then 9 and then 0 showing up.
Drag it out too far and you’ll see 1 and 2 etc. as it loops.
What you need to do is zoom in on the new clip to expand it on the timeline.
The easiest way to do this is with the wheel button on your mouse.
If you don’t have a wheel mouse, then Ctrl+Up/Down Arrow will do the same thing.

Believe it or not, Mike, I just figured it out before you posted that last comment. 🙂 Thanks very much for your help and prompt reply though! I don’t suppose you know why that happens … with the clip I mean. It seems counter-intuitive to cut a clip and then still have it actually there?

Sam, all I can tell you is that’s the way Vegas does it.
My first NLE was a dpsVelocity and it worked with trimmed clips the way you originally described.
It took me a while to get my head wrapped around the way Vegas did things but, over time, I’ve grown to love it.

If you create a SUBCLIP in the trimmer, then you’ll only have the trimmed part of the clip when you add it to the timeline!

Yes Vegas is a non distructive program as are most now days. Any small clip from the trimmer, or cutout with the s key will expand, (Drag the edges) out to the full original clip, then repeat where you see a small indent on top of th clip. The trimmer and split feature only reference which part of the clip to play. The whole clip is there on all peices, unless you render a new small clip as a new file. Danny Hays

Also if you click on the file in the project media tab, it tells you the format and lenth at the bottom of the project media tab. In the same way, in the exporer tab, files that are not even in your project yet work the same way but in the bottom of the explorer tab. Hope this helps, Danny Hays
