How do I quickly determine the duration of a snippet or clip of video
once its on the timeline? -

Double-click it and then look in the Selection Box (bottom right of the Vegas screen).

Don’t beat yourself up Harry.
I used Vegas for a few years before I realized what those boxes were and just how useful they can be.
For example, to jump to a specific timecode, enter the time in the appropriate box, hit Enter and you’re there.
