Greetings all. I am completely new to HD video and Sony Vegas. I recently got a Canon HF S20, and am using the trial version of Vegas. I was having difficulty getting any output to look good. It all looked grainy and choppy. As was my custom with my High-8 tape cam and Roxio, I was rendering everything as AVI. I have recently discovered that by rendering as different file types, the quality of my video improved greatly. I just tested rendering as 8Mbps .WMV, and the video looks great. However, the files are enormous. Can anyone give me a basic run down of the steps I need to take to make basic videos that will be burned to DVD, and what would be the best rendering option? Thank you

Is the Canon HF S20 not an AVCHD camera? And do you want to make a DVD or an Bluray?

Greetings Theo, and thank you for the response. The camera is AVCHD, and my intent is to burn to standard DVD. I am able to import the .mts files with no problem, but I’m not sure which render option I need to use for burning to DVD. I read one post where a responder to the post indicated for DVD you need to render as mpeg2. However, I’m confused as which options to choose when rendering. The “Save as type” option is clear, but the “Template” option is not so clear. How do I know which template to use for burning to DVD? It seems to me no matter which I choose, the DVD is only capable of holding so much information, so anything extra will be thrown out.

First of all, you should not use the save as option, since this will only save the project file. To make a DVD, myou need the RENDER AS option.

If you want to create an SD DVD, you should render to MPEG2 and use the DVD Architect NTSC video stream template (or PAL, depending on where you live, or widescreen, depending on your footage).

You can activate the TWO PASS option (under the CUSTOM button you will find a VIDEO tab where you can select the two pass option).

The audio should be rendered as AC3.

Thanks for the tips Theo. The “Save as type” drop down menu to which I referred in my original post is on the “Render as” dialog box, not the “Save as” option under the File menu. I can see how the wording of my post would give you a false impression. I will give it a shot and post back with the results.
