  • how to make voices sound like they are not coming from inside a room

Posted by Derek Hammer on March 24, 2010 at 4:21 am

    hello,
I recorded a conversation inside a recording studio to be used as a voice over for a video of a conversation outside. However, the voices still sound like they are coming from a room.

Is there a way that Sony Vegas can help with this problem?
    thanks so much

If you have Sound Forge, you can use the “Impulses” option to sound like you’re in a wide variety of different spaces.

You can also try a light touch of reverb or delay with the built-in audio plugins in Vegas.

    thanks for the help!

I tried doing this though, and it seemed to only ADD reverb and delay to the sound file. My problem is that I already have a bit of delay in the sound, and I want to get rid of it to sound more like the characters are outside, and not inside a room.

    any ideas?
    Thanks again

In that case, I’ll repeat my original suggestion of Sound Forge in conjunction with Impulses (they’re free from Sony).

I think the best way to fix the problem is to take your mic and your laptop outside and record 15 to 30 minutes of background noise. Just record the ambient sound that would have been in the background had you recorded your voice over outside. Then go back in and add the new audio as a track underneath of all the other audio. This will give you that feeling like the audio belongs with the video.

Sorry Mike, but I worked with my sound guy and we couldn’t figure out what you were referring to with “impulses”. sound Forge has the option to add reverb, which it calls Impulse.. but are you talking about an additional plugin of some sort?

    Thanks again

    Thanks for the advice Jason,

Well actually I already have the ambient noise in place, but it won’t hide the echoe unless it’s so loud that it almost muffles out the voices.

I would still like to know what this “impulses” thing is that Mike was talking about. Can someone help?

    Thanks

Thanks for the help with that, Theo…

I’ve looked in the help file and online, and I can’t find info on how to use these effects. When I go to the plugin manager in Vegas, I don’t see these effects listed. I put them in my Sony/Shared PLugins/Audio folder.

Would you mind briefly telling me how I can go about using these?
    Thanks again

    Derek, I placed my Impulses in C:\Program Files\Sony\Shared Plug-Ins\impulses.
To apply them in Vegas at the Track level, click the Track FX icon, click the Plug-in chain icon, click All, click Acoustic Mirror, choose an impulse and follow the prompts.
At the Event level in Vegas, right-click the audio event, select Apply Non-Real Time Event FX and repeat as above after clicking on All.
To apply them in Sound Forge, load a file and go Effects – Acoustic Mirror and follow the prompts.
