Adding .AVI files is missing audio / sound
Posted by Paul Chu on January 22, 2010 at 10:45 pmHi all,
I’m trying to figure out why .AVI files from my RCA Small Wonder Pocket Video camera are missing the audio when imported into Sony Vegas Movie Studio 9.
I tried using a tool: VideoInspector to troubleshoot.
It says i’m missing some codecs. But, I’m not sure if this tool is a safe one and is misleading me to “unsafe” pages to download questionable codecs.
I documented the issue on my blog here ( please take a look )
https://paulchu.wordpress.com/2010/01/22/video-sony-vegas-movie-studio-platinum-9-does-not-like-my-avi-files-finding-codecs/I hope that I can install codecs to get Sony Vegas to recognize the audio directly without me having to convert the .AVI to .WMV first for each file.
Can someone direct me where to find the xVid codecs etc. for my Windows 7 Dell E1525 laptop ?Thanks for your help, Paul

January 23, 2010 at 3:01 amHi Mike K.,
Thanks for the link to the XVID Video codec.
Video Inspector now shows the XVID codec is installed !
I tried looking for the Audio Codec
MPEG 1 or 2 Audio Layer 1
but can’t seem to find it.
Any suggestions ?
Many Thanks, Paul

January 24, 2010 at 3:14 amHappy weekend to all,
Still looking for Audio Codec: MPEG 1 or 2 Audio Layer 1
to possibly resolve Sony Vegas not importing audio from my .AVI files
I found this old ( 2004 ) “Nimo Codec Pack” but … didn’t try it.
https://www.free-codecs.com/download/nimo_codec_pack.htm
Updated: 1 Jan 2004 | Freeware | 7.42MB | Downloads: 939,490 Developer
long list includes
MPEG Layer-2 Audio Decoder
Since, this is so old, I’m not sure if installing this will cause problems with existing codecs etc ?
Thanks for your help, Paul

January 24, 2010 at 12:46 pmPaul, I’m not certain that the codec you’re looking for is the one you really need.
I checked out the web site for that camera but your specific model is no longer listed 🙂
However, several older models mentioned AVI files using the MJPEG codec.
Please check your manual and see if this is the case.
If it is, follow my instructions in the Imported Video Audio thread. -

January 25, 2010 at 2:15 amHi Mike,
Thanks for hanging in there with me.
I see that the specs for my RCA Small Wonder EZ201 are not posted on the RCA website.
My model EZ201 does NOT show specs:
The closest models EZ200 and EZ205 do show specs :
RECORDING QUALITY
Video Standard: NTSC
Video Compression Format: MJPEG4
ADPCM
AVI
Recording Resolution: 640 x 480 in HQ MODE @ 30FPS
448 x 336 in WEBQ MODE @ 30FPS
Maximum Recording Time: 4.0 hours in HQ MODE
16.0 hours in WEBQ MODEI tried downloading the Main Concept MPEG Video Codec but it still doesn’t resolve the Audio Missing problem on importing .AVI into Sony Vegas Movie Studio 9.
I blogged with the details:
Original Post:
https://paulchu.wordpress.com/2010/01/22/video-sony-vegas-movie-studio-platinum-9-does-not-like-my-avi-files-finding-codecs/So, I’m still hoping I can find an Audio Codec which will fix this ?
for MPEG 1 or 2 Audio Layer Audio CodecThanks to all, Paul

January 25, 2010 at 4:07 amPaul, my concern is that there may have been codec differences between your model and later ones.
I’m guessing that you no longer have the manual or CD that may have come with the camera.
At this point, all I can suggest is to try ffdshow from SourceForge.
It’s free and from a trusted site. -

January 25, 2010 at 4:34 amGood Evening Mike,
Thanks for the ffdshow suggestion but on my blog, Video Inspector shows I already have them installed.
So, is it fruitless to look for the Audio Codec ?
I wonder if the .AVI problem is just with a few of the older video cameras ?Yes, I don’t have the original CD or the manual anymore but from the RCA website
The RCA EZ201 manual is here ( but no mention of CODECS )
https://audiovox2.info/docs/rca_sw/man/EZ201_DOC_OM.PDFThis is the RCA webpage for the EZ201 ( no specs )
Thanks again, Paul

January 25, 2010 at 7:45 pmPaul, it would probably help if you could put a few seconds of the clip up on a site somewhere so we could download it and play with it ourselves.

January 26, 2010 at 3:59 amHi Mike,
Well I don’t have a place to save a .AVI file.
paulchu.wordpress.com (free website ) won’t allow an .AVI upload.
So, I need a place to save it.
Youtube will convert the file if I try to upload it.I’ll work on this.
Thanks, Paul
