  DVD video import to Vegas 9: the best editing format?

  Some archival DVD source material will be ripped and edited in Vegas 9. What format would be preferred for preserving video quality?

  Perhaps .avi because it is lossless?

  h.264 receives high marks for quality but that–if I understand the situation properly–is in comparison to other *compressed* formats and so h.264 is mainly an output format, not an editing format. Right?

  So, perhaps convert to .avi for editing and then output as an h.264 file or mpeg for DVD burns, right?

  You can’t “improve” on the MPEG source, so bear that in mind. You might convert to .mxf format, which is used by XDCAM to contain MPEG.
  AVI is just a container. it can be as lossless or lossy as you wish for it to be. Think of it like a paper bag with a description on the outside. Virtually anything (including MPEG) can go in there.

  Thank you, Douglas. That is a very helpful tip regarding .mxf.

  I was also wondering about “up-converting” the video, burn to a HD disc (DVD HD or Blu-Ray)to allow projection on a 720P/1080i projector. Or just use an up-converting DVD player. … just hoping to add a little refinement to archival footage shot decades ago.

  BTW, I have several of your training videos, which I find are a great help in seeing methods and effects in action. Thank you for those.

  Hi,

  I’ve been having several problems with Sony Vegas 9 Pro lately and was wondering if you could answer these several questions.
  1.Why does a MP4 file imported in Sony Vegas 9 display the audio file compressed (i.e. shorter) compared to the video file?
  2.Is this a common experiance with MP4 files?
  3.What is the preferred import file format for SOny Vegas 9?
  4.I have lag during Preview. Is this normal for all media file formats or just for MP4 clips?
  5.Are there instructions to improve Preview?
  These are alot of questions to answer, but are all related to problems I have on Sony Vegas 9 Pro. Help would be much appreciated.
