Rendering Question
I’m new to Sony Vegas and have Pro8. I’m having a really difficult time trying to figure out rendering. I’ve been using other programs where I can just save the project to whatever size and quailty I wish….but with Vegas 8 it doesnt seem as simple. I got this program because I want to have more options with editing my home videos and seem a bit more professional…I think Ive read almost every single post and forum on the web…well almost. Any help would be appreciated. With all the $$$ Ive spent on equipment I was wishing for better results from Vegas 8. Im sick of Nero, winDVD and Movie Maker.

Sony DCR-SR 300
Vegas 8 Pro
Toshiba Satellite Intel(R)Core 2 CPU, 1.66GHz 1.99 GB RAM -

WHAT are you trying to render to?
Rendering for DVD?
Rendering for web?
What’s your ultimate goal in rendering? That will determine the answer you’re given.
Generally speaking, when rendering you’ll have many presets to choose from. With formats like WMV and MPEG, you’ll be able to adjust the bitrate if you go into “Custom”. The lower the bitrate, the smaller the file, and the worse it will look. You need to figure your tradeoff for file size vs quality to determine the bitrate you wish to use.

If I understand his question he is looking to render a preview. In final Cut it is option R and in Premiere you simply hit the enter key. In Vegas I am running into the same problem, when I want to preview a complex effect. I can do it if I prerender a selected segment but it takes forever. I tried previewing to ram but that did not work for me. Any suggestions?
P4 2.8, 1 gig ram, xp Pro

For previewing, you have a few options:
RAM Render: Shift B – Renders to RAM for a quick preview of a small area.
Pre-Render: Shift M – will prerender the selected area or the entire project allowing smooth previews. Disadvantage is that prerenders are easily lost.
Render to new Track: CTRL M – will render the selected area or the entire project to a new track.

I apologize for not getting back to this thread sooner…but being in the military has kept my schedule too busy for playing with my home videos…..
My ultimate goal is to have good quality home videos with cool transitions and effects that vegas 8 offers. Ive figured all the ins and outs with vegas 8 with the exception of rendering. My camcorder is a Sony DCR-SR300 standard Def, CMOS semsor, Hard Disk Drive,I shoot in 16:9, HQ. When I hook up my camera to my 50in Wide High Def LCD TV….it looks pretty close to DVD quaility. Ive rendered in every possible format (even the ones I knew were gonna suck) just to see which is the best results. The picture quality and sound isnt even close to as good as playing it back off my camera. I get better rendering results with nero 8. Ive used the basic templetes as well as tweaking the other settings….any help is greatly appreciated. I have read all the articles in all the posts concerning my question. This is starting to make me sick to my stomach…ahhhhhh! Help……

If you want them on a standard DVD, render to MPEG2 using one of the DVD Architect presets.
Vegas Pro 8 allows burning to BluRay straight from the timeline.

I dont have DVD Architect. Im using Vegas Pro 8 to edit and save as MPEG2 and then using NERO 8 to author my DVD. Could this be a reason for the poor video/audio quaility? As Ive used NERO 8 in the past to edit and author DVDs the quaility was good. NERO just doesnt have many editing options to spice up my family videos. I’ll be getting DVD Architect soon from my buddy to try and see if this is the reason….any thoughts?

It doesn’t matter whether or not you use DVD Architect. You can still use the DVD Architect presets.
As for using Nero, I’ve never done that. If Nero is taking the video and re-rendering it then, yes, that can be producing a quality hit. You might consider rendering from Vegas to AVI instead and letting Nero convert it to MPEG2.
I use DVD Architect for authoring. I have used Nero for burning but have never used it for other tasks. I figure Nero is good at burning and DVD Architect is good at authoring.
