Yeah the Text control makes no sense to me. First of all there’s no sync cursor, so you have to make sure you identify the maximum length of the text event in the keyframe timeline…basically..U-do-it….(using the slider is helpful.) Plus the control has a preview window which may or may not jive with the main preview window which is also annoying. It’s not clear how you rescale in which preview window or which is current while you are doing it, also doubling annoying…anybody else have this problem?

[MattInLA] “First of all there’s no sync cursor”

Correct. ALL generated media has no sync cursor.

[MattInLA] “identify the maximum length of the text event in the keyframe timeline…”

You can create a selection area on the timeline for the size you want the text event, right-click the track in that selection area, choose to insert the generated media, and it will be created the length of the selection area.

[MattInLA] “Plus the control has a preview window which may or may not jive with the main preview window”

Never seen the two not match. I can see that you may be looking at two different spots in the timeline but if you look at the same spot, they will match each other.

-Yes, that works fine, however please confirm that if you are doing keyframing on a text event, you must know the length of the event because the “unsynced” text keyframe timeline will allow you to insert keyframes anywhere – including places outside the length of the event which is absolutely meaningless and which behaves in extremely unpredictable ways (i.e. it appears to loop back to the first keyframe, just like if you extend a clip beyond its end looping from the beginning. It is essentially, NULL SPACE. Does this make sense?

Nope. If the event is 5 seconds long, the timeline at the bottom of the generated media is 5 seconds long. Now, there *IS* a “length” field at the top of the dialog. If you change the size of the event on the timeline, you might also want to change that “length” to match. Otherwise you could end up with some discrepencies.

For example, right now my default length is set to 5 seconds. If I add a text generated media to the timeine it is 5 seconds long, in the dialog it shows a “length” of 5 seconds, and the generated media timeline is also 5 seconds.

Now suppose I change the length on the TIMELINE to 3 seconds. When I open up the generated media it’s “length” is still 5 seconds and the generated media timeline is still 5 seconds so I *could* create keyframes that would never be seen.

Taken conversely, suppose I change the length on the TIMELINE to 12 seconds. When I open up the generated media it’s “length” is still 5 seconds and the generated media timeline is still 5 seconds so I can’t create keyframes that would change anything beyond the original 5 second point even though the event is 12 seconds.

If I change the event length on the timeline, I also need to change the “length” in the generated media to match if I want the generated media timeline to also match that new length.

Nothing strange going on here related to the generated media timeline that I can see.

This is all totally understandable. My only gripe is that the text keyframe timeline should not have to be adjusted manually at the top if you change it on the main timeline – it should self adjust! However, I am still new to keyframing and the reasons for it being the way it is may become apparent if I keep working with it. You have total control, it’s all up to you.

That bothered me some too, initially. It doesn’t anymore. If I get everything “exactly right” and decide it need to be slower or faster I just hold down the CTRL key and resize the event as desired.
