When checking the playback/preview it is frequently jittery. It can’t be lack of RAM (1.5 GBytes). My apologies if this has been covered before but I am almost a complete beginner both to Vegas and to this forum. Thank you in advance for any help.

Playback is determined by many factors. One is the preview setting. Plus are there any effects added? Any compositing? Transitions? etc…

Many thanks Edward for your reply. Although I said I was new to Vegas, which is true, I’m far from new to computing in general. I realised that playback/preview involved the interpretation of the ‘effects’ etc on the ‘fly’ so to speak (in the same way as an interpreted computer languages work).

In answer to your question there are ‘effects etc’ in the previewed clips I’m using. If it is basically this that causes the jittery playback then I’m satisfied just to understand that. If there is anything I could do to lessen the effect please let me know.

    Many thanks.

    Ways to lessen the problem:

    1. Change the preview mode “Preview (Auto)”. Using any of the “Full” ones will slow it down. Upping the quality (“Good” or “Best”) will also slow it down.

    2. Turn OFF the effects if you don’t need them (There’s a “bypass effects” button just above the preview screen – just remember to turn it back off)

    3. Make sure you don’t have a hard drive logjam – too many files coming off the same drive to read them fast enough.

    4. Don’t use 3d track motion in projects that don’t need it. If you DO need it in a project, make that section a seperate project.

    5. Make sure the track level sliders are at 100%

    6. etc…
