no video timeline or video preview
I’m trying out Sony Vegas for the first time. When I drag an AVI file from the explorer window on to the upper half of the window I get an audio track but no video track and, of course, no video preview. Any suggestions?

What is the source of the video? What codec was used? You need whatever codec is required for that video installed.
For example, this is a common complaint with people using video from still cameras. Most still cameras use the MJPEG codec so it’s just a matter of downloading the codec that Vegas can use and getting it installed. Vegas requires a “Video for Windows” codec.

Thank you Edward. They are all avi files. Several come from a digital video camera. Several come from video capture in avi format from video tapes, using iuvcr. One is an avi file output from Movie Plus 5 from serif. Can you tell me where to get the appropriate codecs?

It all depends on what codecs are in those files. YOU will have to look into those files to see what codecs were used. “AVI” is just a container file that can hold many different kinds of codecs.
One thing you might try is using a program such as “GSpot” which will tell you what codec was used. Then it’s just a matter of finding that codec in a format that Vegas can use (i.e. it needs to be a “Video for Windows” codec).

Thanks again Edward. Here’s a question: Since these files open successfully in Ulead 11, Power Director and Movie Plus 5, wouldn’t this indicate that the required codecs are already on my computer?

Thanks Eddy. I’ve downloaded the Gspot program and here are the results for each of five files that do not load and play in Vegas:
2 files YUY2 codec. Gspot message is “no codec required.”
1 file codec DIV3. Gspot message is “codec is installed.”
1 file MJPG. Gspot message is “codec is installed.”
1 file MPEG2. Gspot message is “codec is installed.”
Why won’t vegas read the video in these files? All other programs and the Windows Media player have no trouble with them.

NO. You probably have a DirectX codec installed but not a VfW codec installed. That’s why I specifically said you need a “Video for Windows” codec. Some other programs use DirectX codecs and some use both. You can find links to an MJPEG codec here. For the others, you’ll have to search.

hey this is just an update, i just tried installing k-lite codec pack which installs a lot of codecs and now avi files are previewed fine. this worked for me, hope it works for you.
