Capturing video from mini dv, some Qs and best practices?
Hi all,
I’m an audiovisual artist, and I’m in the process of researching in order to streamline my workflow for best quality image. Regarding capturing video, I’m using a panasonic pv-gs250 PAL minidv camera. I’m capturing using vegas capture application via firewire, so far so good, 0 dropped frames.Does the vegas project settings affect the way video is captured (for instance interlacing and field order settings)? What are the recommended color correction and level optimization techniques after capturing? What about compression when capturing? I’m almost sure that all my compressed video files will be mjpeg because of quality and performance. Are there any other things i should take into account when capturing video?

When you capture dv, it is a direct transfer just like copying a file from one place to another on your computer, so no changes are made one way or the other.

Thanks a lot for your reply. So, i should only take into account the interlacing settings and such when rendering, right?
I ask because a friend of mine had the following problem when doing a small publicitary clip. He received a minidv tape with some footage taken from a tv broadcast. He captured it, and then threw the avi into macromedia flash for doing some animations. After working with the animation, he rendered an avi file directly from flash, but at the tv station they complained that the video should have lower field dominance, because the tv footage looked bad. Clearly macromedia flash doesn’t understand of interlacing options, as it is designed for computer display. The question was whether the problem started at the capture of the tv footage from the minidv disk, or was generated in flash…
