Image Sequence – yes, via a script
Targa files – no, your options are JPG and PNG

But will JPG or PNG seq be inferior in quality to TGA ?

Why does everyone opt for a TGA seq ? It doesnt pixelate or any other advantages ?

If you feel quality will be ok in JPG or PNG seq then can i do this in VMS platinum. It needs a script ? I dont know scripting at all ? What should i do ?

Basically this is for an advt to be screened in a cinema theatre. That theatre has a DLP projection system and projects the AD Film from a server (NO FILM). I thought doing the film this way saves cost and quality loss which might come though Telecine etc.

As a final point i also had a workaround idea that might be ok. But correct me if im wrong please. Original footage is DV. So if i import the DV AVI,, Edit,,, then rendered to AVI uncompressed (since ive heard that will not squeeze the quality at all). Then give the theatre the Uncompressed AVI (so far no quality loss i assume) and they can render out to TGA on their system and use it for screening. This way i dont have to worry about sound sync also. Am i Right or All wrong ?

Thanks for all your help Jedi.

[plainman007] “But will JPG or PNG seq be inferior in quality to TGA ?”

Go with PNG – you’re quality will be fine.

VMS doesn’t support scripting. Therefore, you have to built-in automated options.

Render the segment out and the use something like VirtualDub to output your image sequence. If you want the highest possible quality, render to uncompressed AVI (warning – it will be huge!).

After reading the last paragraph, just render to DV-AVI. If you’re starting with DV-AVI, rendering to uncompressed will NOT improve quality.

I assume you meant after reading about the file size. Rather go with rendering to DV-AVI.

Yes i start out with DV-AVI. You are absolutely right that rendering to Uncompressed AVI wont improve clarity. But wont rendering to DV-AVI apply the DV compression once more over the final output. Or is it that if we capture, edit and render to DV-AVI theres absolutely no resolution loss ??

If you have made NO changes to the video, the file will simply be COPIED so there will be no recompression meaning there would be no resolution loss.

No, but there will be changes. Thats why im editing it. LOL. So when i edit and apply transitions etc to this DV-AVI the best way to maintain (not improve, i know thats not possible) quality would be to render to AVI Uncompressed or DV-AVI. The question here is not about improving the quality but rather making sure theres no loss on the original quality.

By no changes, that typically means no effects. Naturally transitions will have to be rendered. But even then you’re simply combining two DV sources. Give going to DV-AVI a try. I think you’ll be happy with the results.
