Hard Drive Workflow?
I get a bit confused on which workflow would be best for me to use regarding drives. I have a 500gb (C drive) and a 250 gb (D drive) both are internal drives. Plus I have 3 removeable USB drives of various sizes (160 gb to 250 gb). Vegas is loaded on my C drive. I have been capturing, and saving my files to the D drive. I do my rendering to the D drive. I don’t render to the C drive because I read that I should not do that because (I guess you could say) that’s my main drive where all the software/windows stuff resides. I also read that if you render to your source drive which in my case would be my D drive your render times will be slower. Can someone give me some suggestions on how I can maximize this setup?

Your biggest drive should, typically, NOT be your boot drive. In your case, you have a TON of wasted space because you’re not using your C drive (which is generally recommended). Instead, you’d be better off having a smaller C drive and using the 500gig for video storage.
Also generally speaking, it is recommended that you render FROM one drive to a DIFFERENT drive. In your case, I think this could be drive “C” since you have so much free space there. The reason being, if you’re reading and writing to one drive, things will be slower than if you’re reading from one drive and writing to another.

Your answer about my boot drive being bigger than secondary drive was what I was afraid I would hear. The next time my machine is in need of some internal work I will have them switch the drives. Unfortunatly that type of work is out of my league. I will in the meantime start rendering to the C drive.

Be sure to defragment both your drives on a regular basis which also speeds up the process (especially your C drive since this is also your boot drive).

Regarding defragmenting–I’ve heard that there are better utilities out there than the one that windows uses. Can anyone recommend one?

O & O Defrag is a good one to look at – can’t recall andyone the free tools being any good. Maybe they do exist but just haven’t found one yet.
