Vegas 13 Pro Edit No AMD R9 390 GPU Render 15.7 Catalyst
I could not get Vegas 12 Platinum nor Vegas 13 MS to use my new Radeon GPU for rendering for either Sony AVC or Mainconcept. I downloaded and installed Vegas Pro Edit 13; it does not use the GPU either.
The indication that the GPU is not being used is because the GPU temperature does not rise, while the CPU gets hot enough to spin up the fan quite a bit.
-Of course preferences and template settings are set to use OpenCl. -And Vegas 12 Platinum “Check GPU” returns “OpenCL is available”
-And Vegas 13 Pro Edit TRIAL reports AMD Hawaii (Haw…) present.Removed and reinstalled AMD drivers, using CC Cleaner to remove registry entries after uninstall- No effect

The MainConcept encoder only works with very old GPU’s circa 2010. Anything older than the Radeon HD 6000 series will not work. My Radeon HD 5870 works great… my Radeon HD 7950 does not.
Sony AVC should use whatever modern GPU that you have. I’ll have to do some tests with my Radeon HD 7950 and see but it should use OpenCL with newer cards.

Ok, it used to work with a radeon 5700.
But, now I am rendering in “Sony AVC/MVC”. There is even a button to press which returns “OpenCL is available”, but it is still CPU.
Since I have very high speed upload capabilities, I will use lower compression (eg 135 mb/sec) for 1080-60p and let googleyoutube do the rest.
But I paid alot for the 390 expecting it to work with Vegas.

Thank you for contacting Sony Creative Software.
The GPU only takes on some processes that are supported by GPU Acceleration, like the page peel effect in Vegas. The GPU in your system will only take on processes that are meant to be accelerated by it. Otherwise, your CPU will take on the rest of the work.
To reach the fastest rendering times you can, you have to address what bottlenecks are present in your system, which can vary based on CPU and GPU capabilities, RAM and disk speed, source format and effects used, as well as render formats and templates.

There are two places that the GPU is used. One is rendering the FX on the timeline, and the other is encoding the video to a file. While the MainConcept AVC encoder won’t work with the 390 for encoding, the rendering of FX on the timeline will absolutely use the AMD R9 390 GPU so you are still getting GPU acceleration from that card.
If you want to see the difference, turn off GPU Acceleration under Options | Preferences | Video and restart Vegas Pro and time the render. Then turn it back on, restart, and time the render. The second render should be faster regardless of what encoder you use.

John- I know you are an expert, but I think you would change your mind if you saw these results:
While rendering to Sony AVC, the GPU acutally fell in temperature as the CPU fans tried to keep the I7 cool. There is absolutely no evidence that the GPU is doing any work other than updating the preview window.

What GPU acceleration are you talking about. Timeline Playback? Rendering? or both? I was referring to Timeline Playback which has absolutely nothing to do with any particular render engine.
