  • I can’t open an MP4 file in Vegas Movie Studio

Posted by Margaret Mitchell on January 22, 2016 at 6:13 pm

I have Sony Vegas Movie Studio 9.0 and when I try to open an MP4 file, I get an error message “Warning: An error occurred while loading the project file. The reason for the error could not be determined.”

When I click on the filename in the explorer window (in Vegas), I don’t see the file properties (screen size, format, etc..) For other files that don’t open, sometimes the program just crashes when I try to click on the file in the explorer window.

Now bear in mind that I have opened MP4 files many times before and it worked just fine. For the files that DO open, I can see the properties displayed when I click on the file name (in the explorer window).

I need this for work. It’s driving me crazy. Anybody have any idea what’s going on? Are there different formatting versions for MP4 files?

I have a PC (not a MAC). I thought file formats should work on both platforms regardless of where it was saved originally.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

[Margaret Mitchell] “Are there different formatting versions for MP4 files?”

Only a bazillion!!! Seriously… The MPEG4 specification is insanely broad. No program can support all of the possibilities. There are 31 different Parts, 9 different Levels and 2 different Profiles. Newer version of Movie Studio have steadily added more compatibility but even then you will fine MP4 files that cannot be opened for one reason or another.

I would download the trial of Movie Studio 13.0 If the file opens with that perhaps it’s time to retire your 8 year old Movie Studio 9 and upgrade for $49 USD.

You may have opened many MP4’s before, but there are a million flavors
of MP4 out there, no one software can cover all of them, like what is reaching
    you now.
Still, Movie Studio 9 is quite old, its quite possible that newer versions
may can handle MP4’S like that….

Thanks so much for your replies, I really appreciate it.

I found an inexpensive solution. I purchased an MP4 converter, converted all the files and they opened perfectly in Vegas Movie Studio 9. The software cost me only $20, so I’ll be using this from now on and finally have peace of mind.

    Cheers!

I’m glad you found a solution. You might want to share the name of the converter you purchased with the COW community so that others who are looking for a smilier solution in the future might be helped by it.
