Best “Optimize Disc” settings for DVD burning in DVD Architect Pro 6.0?
Hey guys.
I started playing around with DVD Architect Pro again (it’s been awhile since I’ve last used it), and I have to refresh myself with it. Some immediate questions:
For one, my project was shot at 23.976 FPS, and so I rendered it out as such (no pulldown method chosen) yet it seems that DVD Architect Pro will only make my video at 29.97 FPS. Any way to change this, or no? Is this even an issue? I notice in the Video 1 tab on Optimize Disc, I can change the frame rate to 23.976 progressive (also, with progressive scan, what do I do for this? On my project properties in Sony Vegas Pro 13, I have the deinterlace method selected as “None”. Is this the same thing? It’s been so long, I can’t remember), but in Project Properties, it’s only 29.97. Also, the progressive option is either yes, no, auto. What do I pick?

Now I’m noticing another issue. Here’s a screencap:
I don’t want to recompress my project. I used the DVD Architect render in Sony Vegas Pro 13 to make my MPEG2 – why does the program need to recompress my video?

No. NTSC TV’s in the age of DVD’s only operated at 29.97 and there’s nothing you can do about that.

Did you use the DVD Architect 24p NTSC Widescreen video stream template in Vegas Pro and not change it? if you changed it, you caused the problem. That template will not recompress if it’s left unchanged.

Honestly, and pardon my ignorance, I’m still not sure what progressive scan is or what it does… however, in Sony Vegas Pro 13 (and correct me if I’m on the wrong subject here), I had my deinterlace method set to “None”, and my Field Order set to “None (progressive scan)”. Guess I kinda answered my own question? Is there an advantage or disadvantage to my settings for my project or any real notice that will stand out to an audience member that looks unnatural? I’ve always used these settings and never noticed any weird blurs or anything like that, so maybe I’m fine?

Progressive scan means that each frame of the footage is represented as a whole picture not Interlaced. Interlacing was a method of transmitting Television images such that a frame was broken up into odd and even scan lines called fields. Because the technology of the late 1930’s early 1940’s couldn’t refresh the Cathode Ray Tube in television sets fast enough, the interlacing system only refreshed odd then even lines which gave our eyes enough time to retain the picture and eliminate the flicker. TV has been an interlaced medium ever since. Until recently, video cameras would capture their images in much the same way as separate fields. With the instruction of progressive video cameras that took entire frames at a time, came progressive TV’s that display entire frames at a time. That’s probably more than you wanted to know but you can’t appreciate progressive without understanding interlaced that came before it.

That will only work if your camera shoots progressive footage. If, however, your camera shoots interlaced footage (like DV or HDV) then you should select a Deinterace method in your project. You didn’t say if your source was progressive or not but if you set it incorrectly, you would know because there would be huge interlace lines across your rendered image.
