Render to High definition File
Hi. I’m trying to render high definition footage to an MP4 file (h.264) so I can save the 5 hour video on a flash drive. So far it’s taken well over 8 hours! Is this normal? I have the Intel Quick Sync working for me. I’m stuck.

Yes, it’s completely normal for rendering to highly compressed formats like AVC/H.264 to take 2x – 3x logner than real-time to render so I wouldn’t be surprised if your 5 hour video took 10 – 15 hours to render depending on your CPU.

I suspect that most editors don’t do 5 hr videos. My beloved of over 40 years would call an attorney if I asked her to watch 5 hrs of anything. LOL. If rendering time is an issue, then get a faster computer or reduce the quality of your render or reduce the length of your video. Lots of options.

The project is a 5 hour wedding video. I also need to render it for Bluray. What would be the best setting to render it quickly? My computer is speed inc. 🙂

Michal, I don’t do Blu-ray so I’ll let others take care of that.
For an MP4 file, you should take a look at frame serving to Handbrake. I do it all the time and I find it a lot faster than letting Vegas do it.

Rendering to MPEG2 would be quicker than AVC but you will never get 5 hrs of MPEG2 on a single Blue-ray disc with any quality. AVC will give you more hours for the same file size but will take longer to render. Take your pick.
