Vegas Pro Production Assistant
I’m considering acquiring Vegas Pro Production Assistant and would like to know if it’s worth it. Who here has used it, and what are your thoughts?
I do several events each year where I end up producing numerous clips: unique lower thirds on each clip, each clip needs to be rendered for DVD authoring, etc… I’m wondering if this software would benefit me.

I have Production Assistant 2 and if I were to do it again today, I would go with https://vasst.com/fasst-apps.aspx
These Fasst Apps are by the same developer and are easy to use. I only used Production Assistant for the Montage Tool and the Rendering, but I switched to the Fasst App Render Assistant as it was more flexible.

I’m the developer who wrote Production Assistant. Feel free to ask any questions. Production Assistant’s strong point is the batch processing capabilities. Basically it contains all of the functionality of the FasstApps which then can be chained to get to automate many tasks at once. if you just need the individual functions to use interactively, you can just purchase that FasstApps that you need.

The FasstApps look pretty cool. I’ll definitely look into all the different tools available.
What I’m looking at needing to do is the following. I’m currently finishing up a large project where I have 47 separate editted clips. They are each their own separate videos and in their own separate .veg files. I would like to do all of the editing and then at night, when I’m not working, use the computer’s resources to render the files. I only need to render them to their own AC3 and MPG files. The current way I have to do that is have multiple instances of SVP open and rendering. Then I have to come back and shut down each one, open another .veg file and render it. Will FasstApps help with that, or do I need Production Assistant to accomplish this?

You currently need Production Assistant to do that. The FasstApps don’t have a batch render function for multiple project (veg) files but Production Assistant does. This is exactly what Production Assistant was designed for. In addition, it can add watermarks or timecode or process the video in various ways before rendering but you could certainly just render them the way they are without modification as a batch of 47 projects.

Is the original Production Assistant (not version 2) compatible with Vegas 13?

I know it won’t instal if all you have is Vegas Pro 13 on your system because it was designed for Vegas Pro 9 and it’s looking for that version to be instaledl. If you already have it installed and open it with Vegas Pro 13 it will probably continue to work. We have never tested this configuration (because it is not supported).

Thanks for the quick answer! I have used it with Vegas 12 in the past, but not often, so I forget that I have it. I am a recreational user (I probably should have stuck with Vegas “Studio” no more than I get time to edit). I have not used it enough to know how well it worked with 12. After I posted the question, I found the user manual & I got it to load with Vegas 13. I did not however have time to see if it worked. I will let you know if & how it works. What are the differences between PA & PA2? And are there any discounts for upgrading?

The biggest update is more processes that you can chain together in the automation stage and the hands-free media card workflow for same-day event editors. It will sense when a camera card is inserted and open the launch tool, select a template, and then launch Vegas Pro and replace all of the media slugs, process the footage, and render without having to touch anything. It’s pretty cool.
