Showing and hiding picture in picture
Hi All,
I have a video that comprises two clips that I’ve “shrunk” using pan/zoom and track motion. On the left I have talking head video; on the right, images (from PowerPoint slides). At various points in the video, I’d like to hide the talking head video and increase the size of the slide (image) so that it take up most of the screen. Later, I’d like to go back to showing both clips.What is the best technique to achieve this effect. I can think of a fews ways to do it but am afraid I’m doing it intelligently. Any guidance appreciated.

I would make the track with the slides the top track because the tracks on top can block seeing the tracks below (which is what you want). Fix the talking head track to look exactly the way you want. Then on the slides track, keyframe the Track Motion to switch the slides between full screen and picture in picture whenever you want. This way when the slides are full screen they will hide the talking head track below it and when they are a PIP they will reveal it. This way you only have to keyframe one track and only have to keyframe Track Motion parameters. That seems the easiest way to me.
Another approach would be to always keep the slides full screen on a lower track and just bring in the taking head as a picture in picture on a track above from time to time. This assumes that there is empty room on the slides to display the talking head PIP without covering valuable information on the slides. If not, use the first approach.

Thanks John. I had thought of the idea of “hiding” the talking head video behind the (nearly) full screen slide, but wondered if there is a simple technique to make a clip “disappear” without cutting the footage?

Sure. Right-click on an empty area of the Track that contains the talking head and choose Insert/Remove Envelope | Composite Level. Then use the Composite Envelope to fade the video in and out at any time.
