Capturing a Photo from Video clip?

What is the best way to get the highest quality photo possible from a video clip? For Printing? Please

I usually use Vegasaur because you can take multiple snapshots, but if you don’t have that here’s what I suggest. Make sure your preview is set to Best/Full. Then select a frame, and click the “Copy Snapshot to Clipboard” icon in the video preview window. Open Photoshop. Create New file (Ctrl-N). The window will open with the dimensions of the image you have copied–in your case 1920 x 1080. Then simply Paste (Ctrl-V) and make whatever changes you want.

Since I normally have my preview window set to “Preview/Auto”, I just leave it on that setting and it will give you the same quality as “Best/Full”. I just tried all the “Auto” settings (Draft, Preview, Good, Best) and they all gave me the same results as “Best/Full”. Just stay away from the “Half” and “Quarter” settings and you should be fine.

I have to disagree. You need to set preview to Best/Full to get the best results. The copy to clipboard function simply copies what is being displayed on the screen, and Vegas will only display the best image on the screen when you set preview to Best/Full.

Recent Vegas versions have switched to Best/Full to take a snapshot when you are in one of the “Auto” modes. This is all done automatically.

According to Vegas Pro Help,

You can change the size of the image using the Preview Quality button: choose Auto or Full to capture the frame at its full resolution, or choose Half or Quarter to capture a smaller image.

Hopefully you don’t want a very big print because HD video is only 6.4 inches by 3.6 inches when printed at 300 DPI.

yea, people don’t realize how low quality video really is. The fact that it moves makes up for the fact that any one frame is pretty poor quality compared to a still image. When you consider that the iPhone takes 8MP stills and HD is only 2MP it’s amazing HD looks so good at 4x less quality.

The misconception comes from the fact that video is watched at 72 DPI and images are printed at 300 DPI so you need lot more pixels to make video look good in print.
