VHS Wobble
Working on an archived VHS digitization that has some extreme wobble towards the end of the film.

If you don’t have a VCR with a built in TBC, then look into the Green Valley (formerly Canopus) ADVC300. It’s no longer being manufactured but Amazon has two used ones for sale. Good luck.

Nothing you can do now. You might be able to correct this in the future by using a capture devices that has Time Base Correction (TBC) like the Canopus ADVC-300 (which is what I use). Perhaps someone with more analog experience than me will have ideas.

John, what about the Canopus ADVC110? I had been considering getting it at some point, but you and Mike talk as if it doesn’t have a TBC. Do you know anything about that model?

Brian, the ADVC110 is a straight analog to digital/digital to analog unit and is great at what it does but it does not have the TBC option that the 300 does. As I recall, the ADVC300 was also 2 – 3 X the price.

Yea, I purchased the ADVC300 because the ADVC110 does not have a TBC and the reason I bought it was to capture old VHS tapes so I knew I would need that feature.

Thanks guys – did a bunch of research on TBC…seems like a lot of options (scalers, VCRs with it built-in and then converting from that) but none of them at a price point I can make because of the rarity of VHS these days.
I started looking into VHS digitization services, which do seem to be reasonably-priced. But the first one I emailed asking if they have TBC on their machines replied that they can’t tell me. Duh!
Does anybody have a recommended service for this?

Good news:
I found a ADVC-300 at a major metro area I happened to be visiting for $60. Then she dropped the price to $30. Agreed to hold it for me for my trip then gave it to me for $20. Estate sale lady who didn’t know what she had on her hands, apparently.
It cleaned up 90% of the wobble in my tapes and also gave me a clearer picture across the board. And now I can sell it!

For that price I’d keep it in a drawer in case you need it in the future. That was a great deal and as you can see, the TBC makes a big difference in the quality of the capture.
