Sony Vegas 12 Frequent crashing

I’m getting numerous crashes with Sony Vegas Pro 12. It’s not specifically related to rendering or any particular action. Sometimes I’m just resizing the timeline, or clicking on a clip and it crashes with a “..has had to close.” type message.
The laptop I’m on is fairly new, bought it about 2 months ago (specs above).
Here’s a list of things I’ve tried so far, with no significant effect on the crashes:
1. Switched off GPU acceleration. No change.
2. Tried running SVP in compatability mode (Windows 8, 7 and Windows Vista). No change.
3. Changed “Enable Multicore rendering for playback” to False. No change.
4. The laptop has a touchscreen. Tried disabling it (just tried this last night). Still crashing.
5. Copying and pasting everything into a new project. Still crashing.I’m running out of things to try. I’m too far down the line in a project to switch to anything else now.
One thing I would say is that it does seem to be crashing more with one particular project file than others.
Just to give a bit of background about me, I’m a composer (18 years experience) and just starting to move into working with video, so I’m fairly new to it (and to this forum). I’m a composer first, and film/video maker a still distant second). I have no doubt that I’m doing things in crazy roundabout ways, as I’m learning as I go. Current project is a 50-minute live performance with video, getting performed in early May.
I hope someone’s able to help me here, as it’s really holding me back.

What kind of files are you working with? Where are the video files stored, on the same hard drive as the OS and Vegas is installed?

AVIs and MP4s (is it bad to have more than one format in a project? This the the sort of thing I’m a bit clueless about. Audio formats yes. Video formats and codecs, not so much yet).
One hard drive but it’s partitioned three ways: OS on one, SVP on another and the videos on yet another.

Partitions do not alleviate the problem which is excessive movement of the disc heads. At least one additional drive would help a lot. Two would be better. If they cannot be added internally, external drives should work. It would help to describe the computer more completely. What processor, how much memory, size of and free space on drives, video card, etc.

I’ve got a fairly new external 2TB Hard Drive that I can hopefully start using by the weekend (its out at the moment).
In terms of hardware, here’s the original info with some more detail. Let me know if I’ve missed anything:

Personally, I would never install a 5400rpm hard disk drive into an editing system, especially where the video files will reside.
You should at least have a 7200rpm drive, and if it’s going to be external make sure it’s USB 3.0 (and that your system has USB 3.0 ports).
I’m almost positive this is why your system is crashing.

Dave, it would appear you were right. Transferred my project over to my USB 3.0 drive and haven’t had a single crash tonight (compared to one every 10-15 mins). Thanks so much.
