Paint brush effect
I’m looking to do a segment where I have a paint palette and digitally have it look like paint brush marks are removing some of the paint to expose another event underneath it. Sort of like paint brush swipes back and forth to expose the background.
Any ideas as how I might accomplish this?

Roger, I can’t remember if you have Photoshop but if you do you can export your segment as a series of frames, bring them into Photoshop and use a custom brush to do what you want.

You might need a paint brush/stroke animation file. Digital Juice’s Compositor Toolkit #2 has some Paint FX. There’s some at https://videohive.net/
Track 1 – Animation clip; add Sony Mask Generator (Luminance)
Track 2 – your “revealed” clip/photo
Track 3 – your backgroundMake Track 2 a child of Track 1.
Change Track 1’s Compositing Mode to Multiply.If you want just a portion of the brush stroke to be used, then add a Mask to the Event on Track 1 (the animation clip).

Why not just use the “Sony Gradient Wipe” transition and then create you a gray-scale (or find a gray-scale) image that would simulate the “painting on”?

Wouldn’t that just create a Static Brush Stroke? My treatment lends movement to the Brush Stroke.

If Roger really wants the look of a paint brush (ie, bristles) look, then he really needs an animation file.

Grazie, just presenting options. With the proper image, it would be easier to apply as a transitions and would not need multiple tracks and composition settings.

Sure, Edward I understand, I do this all the time. However it was this below that makes me think Roger wants Brush “movement”, not a simple static transition through a “brush” mask:-
