Footage back to Camcorder
Gentlemen, once again I find myself stumped, and need your assistance. I’m trying to send edited footage back to my Camcorder to view on it’s Projector. I’m using Sony PMB 5.5.02, the footage starts to send but aborts part way through. I’ve tested sending footage back to my Camcorder using footage that came from the Camcorder and it works flawlessly. So my thought was, nothing is wrong with PMB, I just need to render my footage in the exact same format as footage from my camera. So inside Sony Vegas 12 64-bit I render out to Sony AVC format and match all the other render settings, or try to. I’ll post a picture of their Properties once I get to my other PC. The settings I can’t seem to figure out how to match are the Data Rate and Total bitrate. Looks like my Camcorder wants 26216kbps and 26472kbps respectively. I’m wondering if you guys can offer some suggestions, something I overlooked perhaps? I’m open to any ideas offered.

I guess the question is, “was you camcorder designed to do this?”. It may not be. It may only be designed to quickly show footage that you just shot but not footage that you have edited. I’m guessing that it expects all of the metadata in the AVCHD card stricture to be correct and once you create a file outside that structure, it looses all the metadata regardless of how it’s rendered.
I would contact Sony camera support and ask if what you are trying to do is even possible. if they say yes, then ask them what render options to use.

Hi John, thanks for your input. You are always so helpful on this Forum. Your answer seems logical enough to me, first I should find out if the Camcorder was designed to do this. To me it seems that it should be, given that I can put it’s own footage back on to it. But I’ll contact Sony and see if it can with edited footage. Personally I think the problem lies with Sony AVC export settings, because when I choose 25,999,360 Bit rate in the settings, then check the Properties of the rendered footage it’s Bit rate is 15,596,000 kbps. So it’s not rendering at the setting I’ve chosen. I’ll upload another screenshot to show you. Are you saying you can’t send edited footage back to your camera? Or is it something you’ve never tried?

Actually, I’ve never tried since my camera is used for acquisition. I understand that you have a special camera that has a projector. The problem is that cameras shoot “acquisition” formats and NLE’s produce “delivery” formats and they are not necessarily the same. So it’s really common that your NLE cannot produce the same file that your camera can. This is by design.

Actually it is using the settings you have chosen. Sony AVC uses a variable bit rate. What you are setting is the maximum. So you are telling Sony AVC that’s it’s OK to go up to 25.9Mbps but it only needed 15.5Mbps to render the file. I doubt highly if having a lower bit rate is the problem. It might be the profile that is the problem (i.e., you are using a High profile and it’s expecting a Main or Baseline profile?). Use a tool like MediaInfo to see what profile and entropy encoding the camera files are using and make sure you use the same when rendering.

Hi John, thank you for continuing to try and help me. I took your advice and downloaded MediaInfo, to compare my two files. Here is a screen shot, though I can’t figure which view you want, to see what you call “The Profile”? There are slight differences in each file’s Properties. I guess the only question is how to match the settings? I guess perhaps, like you said, this is not a render setting Vegas is capable of?

I see that the file from your camera looks identical except that it has a 3rd stream which is a Text Stream PGS (Presentation Grapic Stream Subtitle Format). I wonder if the fact that this stream is missing in the rendered file is why the camera won’t recognize it (just a wild guess). Like I said, you need to ask the manufacturer if this camera was meant to play rendered files and if so, what does it take to render them properly so that the camera will recognize them. I assume this would be in the users’s guide if it was a feature of the camera.
