Rendering 60fps .mov file – a nightmare
Hi all,
I’m new to this forum and I’m not a very experienced video-editor, but I am at the end of my wits.
I’ve shot some videos I want to use for a Youtube production. I shot the material on a Nikon 1AW1 at 60fps in .MOV format (which I’ve had trouble with before, but that time I just converted it without a problem). I use Vegas Pro to edit this. I’m having two problems.1. Often when rendering, the video that comes out gives me an epileptic attack. I’m not sure when or why this happens, it seems to be at random. Best results are when I render is as AVCHD, framerate approximately 29 fps, 1920×1080-50i.
If I change ANY of these settings by clicking “custom”, the video comes out completely bizarre. In fact, even clicking “custom” seems to be fatal.2. The second, and possibly more frustrating problem, is that nobody (not even two professionals I’ve asked) seems to be able to render the video without a pretty significant loss of quality. The original, although a little shaky, is beautiful, with super-clear image and really great detail in picture as well as movement. Everything I’ve tried so far – and I’ve tried a lot – ends up with the video being much less pretty. Sure, it’s watchable, but I’ve invested a lot in this to get a nice video and I don’t want to settle for a worse quality now.

Your original video has a bit rate of 21Mbps and your rendered video is only 15Mbps so that’s where you are loosing quality. Your original video is 60fps and the render video is 30fps so that’s where you are loosing smoothness of movement. Finally, your original video is interlaced and your rendered video is progressive which will make it a bit softer due to the deinterlacing so it’s not going to be as sharp looking.
Try using the MainConcept AVC encoder. Start with the Internet 1080-30p template and change the Frame rate to 59.940, the Profile to High, the Field Order to Upper Field First, and Average Bit Rate to 21,000,000 with a Max Bit Rate of 50,000,000 an use the Two Pass option. That should get you pretty close to the original video quality.

The quality still isn’t the best, but I doubt it will make a difference for YouTube.However, I’m now having another problem. When I try to stabilize a shot, it freaks out again – the picture suddenly turning black, shaky, et cetera. Is this because of the .mov file? Or is it something else?

I’m not sure what could be going wrong. Does your project match your media? If not, try stabilizing on a separate project that matches your media just to test if that’s the problem.

Thanks for the reply – the project matches the media. I have since tried uploading it to YouTube and let them do the stabilizing – same problem!
It’s not in every clip, but the clips that start dropping frames in FCP, also drop frames in YouTube. Is there something wrong with the material? -

It sure sounds like it may be the material if several programs exhibit the same problem with it. Have you tried shooting at 30fps and see if that works better. Unless you’re shooting fast moving objects, there is no need to use 60fps. Maybe that is part of the problem?
