  • Defocus effect and Cookie Cutter effect not rendering correctly

Posted by Kmar Cuttheham on March 3, 2014 at 9:54 pm

Hello, I use Sony Vegas Pro 11. Like a few weeks ago, whil I was editin I decided to render my draft so far. For some reason problems have started to occur. Either my video is rendered without it, it renders with glitchy problems or the cookie cutter effects starts to flicker along with the video and just doesn’t look good.

Usually, without the defocus effect, it renders fine. When I click to add the effect to my clips it may show up as a blank effect meaning it is not working or it will cause Vegas to not respond for awhile. Cookie cutter and others effects seem to work pretty much fine.

    What I have tried:
-Re-installing Vegas at least 3 times
-Selected reduce interlace flicker on the clips
-Updated my .NET Framework to 4.5.1

None worked, I don’t know what to try. I would update something if I knew what it was. I rather know why defocus may not be working

Here are my system specs(if needed):
    Windows 7 Ultimate
    Service Pack 1
    Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) Dual CPU E2180 @ 2.00 HGz 2.00 GHz
    Installed Memory (RAM): 1.00 GB
    System Type: 32-bit operating system

I don’t think my specs may be affecting it too much, because the effects worked perfectly long before. Much help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Try rendering it with a different file format. I have trouble rendering some effects (usually 3rd party plugins) using an MXF format but it comes out fine using another format of equal quality.

Or restart Vegas, load back your project and then you render…
I usually have to do that.

Tried restarting it then rendering, it didn’t work. I also tried a different format, nothing new either. Any other suggestions?

There is much you need to be aware of, and then inform us.

Firstly you’re running VP11. What Build number? You’re also running 32bit Win7 which would mean you’re running 32bit VP11. Is this correct?

What FX isn’t working? You aren’t specific. You need to tell us.

Do you see any of this appearing in Preview?

I’ve got 16gb of RAM. You have 1gb. What setting is your RAM Build? You may have reached the end of the PC’s usage with respect to more CPU+RAM intensive activity: tricky FXs and renders will reveal issues. If the PC can’t handle the more trickier FXs then, as you’ve discovered, then swapping to different render formats wont assist, and neither would restarting your PC. You’ve got to assess what your PC can handle.

So you need to be more aware of what your PC can do and what FXs can choke your PC. If you can EXACTLY describe what you’re doing I would be happy to attempt to repeat it here.

BTW, what media, what Render Format and what are your Project settings?

Does your system really have only 1gb of RAM, or was that a typo?

Sorry, first, yea it is 1 Gb. My mom bought this computer never really looking at the ram, she didn’t even know. She has looked for 4 Gb RAM to buy but that will take awhile as she has others things that come first.

Anyhow… about the info you asked me… if you mean for Vegas 11, the build should be 700. Yes it is 32 bit Vegas 11.

The effect that shows problem in the rendering is Cookie cutter and the Defocus effect. However, the Defocus may be the only problem. As I think I stated, if the rendered video chooses to render without the defocus effect then it’ll usually go through fine. If the defocus effect appears in the render, the cookie cutter will usually flicker. And in the video, at most, usually 3 effects will be used in any clip max (maybe 4,which are usually: black and white, defocus,HSl adjust, cookie cutter, motion blue, or black and white monotone.)

In the preview, cookie cutter doesn’t show one problem, not ever. Though, say I started Vegas and tried to render and cancelled the render, I noticed that the defocus effect won’t show up in places where I put them. Vegas only tries to render with defocus when I click on the effect first in the video fx tab then render. As I noticed, when I do that, it takes awhile before the effect choices will show up, like it’s trying to make the effect work. With any other effect, including cookir cutter, the effects choices show up within the second pressed. If anything, way less longer then defocus.

I always use MP4, though I heard WMV was better. I render to WMV but I’m changing that because apparently other formats are better for YouTube. I also render in 720P with Best(Full) quality. I think I use some aspect ratio close to 6:18. It is one of the given choices and it is a rectangular screen. I edit with Preview(Auto) but move to Best(Auto) to see how something looks.

I don’t know how to find setting RAM build, so I need you help there

Here, if this is any good to you, look at this older version of the video that I’m doing so you can see the effects and maybe understand. At the start of the video would be an example where the flickering begins.

[Kmar Cuttheham] “Sorry, first, yea it is 1 Gb.”
Here’s the SONY System Requirements to run your VP11 Build 700 32bit:

    4.0 System Requirements
The following lists the minimum system requirements for using Sony Creative Software Inc. Vegas Pro software:

    Microsoft® Windows Vista® 32-bit or 64-bit SP2, or Windows 7 32-bit or 64-bit
2 GHz processor (multicore or multiprocessor CPU recommended for HD or stereoscopic 3D)
500 MB hard-disk space for program installation
2 GB RAM (4 GB recommended)

[Kmar Cuttheham] “I don’t know how to find setting RAM build, so I need you help there”
OK, you’ll find the setting under:

Toolbar > Options > Preferences > Video Tab : Dynamic RAM Preview

    Cheers

Oh, that’s what you meant. I use that a lot. it should be like 630 or around that. But max that I use of it is 400 because any further makes it harder to edit.
