  • Videogame footage has some kind of motion blur after Render

Posted by Morgan Lewis on February 26, 2014 at 2:07 pm

I’ve just rendered some videogame footage.. I learned early enough to make sure the Framerate is the same.. or at least a multiple (I once rendered PAL footage to NTSC.. wasn’t pretty), so my source materia this time is ‘Double NTSC’, so I’ve rendered to NTSC framerate since you can’t choose Double in the render settings.

There seems to be motion blur in places, it’s a recording of Donkey Kong Country Returns, in one of the minecart sections some of the floating bananas are so out of focus it’s terrible, I checked the source file and it shouldn’t be like that.

I’ve been reading around, could Smart Resample be causing this? I’m doing a rerender now with it disabled, but just incase that doesn’t pan out I wanted to see what else could cause motion blur?

How is the result after you disabled resampling?

Considerably better. and if I pause the video the objects in question are perfectly fine, as opposed to the old render where they’d be blurred even when paused.

I had a little look around online, it seems a LOT of people recommend to always Disable Resampling with video game footage, I guess I know now… just wish it didn’t cost me like 3 hours of rerender time.

That’s good. I disable resampling on everything on the timeline
on all my projects before i do any rendering!

Well I’m glad I know about that now. There’s nothing else you can think of that’s ‘essential’ for videogame footage? I think everything’s good now, but you never know what I could run into down the line.

Certain about that? Cause if you way always have that on I’m going to always have it on. Doing a test now to compare.

I didn’t mean offence, personality quirk. 😛 Hmm, the render with the interlace flicker reduced, at least on this particular video didn’t seem to do anything at all. I would assume because this video was using progressive capture from my Wii.

I guess this option only really does stuff with say, PS2 and below since they’re all interlace outputs? Just for my own peace of mind however, can this setting make a video worse in any way? It would be nice to know if there’s any certain things it could make go wrong so I can identify what’s causing a problem later down the line.

Though until then I suppose it can’t hurt to have it on, thanks Steve. 🙂

So I guess Reduce Interlace Flicker doesn’t have any possible downsides?
