  • rendering slows down as it goes, processor not used

    Hi!

I have a weird issue going on. Made a project, set on render, starts off nice, but then as it goes it gets slower and slower. Process manager shows that while in the beginning the cpu was used around 80%, now it’s like between 30-50%. Why is that happening? The render is still going on, now around 75% completed.

Actually I already detected this happening before, but it did appear lately. I use a laptop for the work. Put the same project on to a desktop and it goes fine. So it should be conneted with laptops hardware. GPU on both computers is not used for rendering. There’s plenty of hard drive space and source material is on an external drive.

As for project settings, I’m upgrading an old VHS captured avi file to HD, using BCC UpRez, levels, color correction, sharpening, Neat etc., and lots of keyframing.

    Cheers.

Everything about your Project shouts massive render time. Sorry.

Render intensive project you have there, So all that
    sounds normal to me.

Yes, that is true what you are saying, but the question remains: Why does the project/Vegas start to use less resources of cpu as the render goes? Why it’s not stable?

I did finish the rendering though and it came out as supposed to, but I would like it to be stable, even if slow. At least I know then how much render time it takes, right now it’s increasing and increasing. That is not good, I have to plan my works and this thing is unpredictable.

    I use a laptop

Rendering is processor intensive, and as you heat up the processor, the laptop will throttle the clock slower to cool it off. Depending on the processor, it may park some cores.

Try running the free program – coretemp – to monitor your CPU temperature and determine if the slowdown correlates to the heat buildup.

I see. That makes sense. I will try to test it with a cooling pad, though I doubt it will help a lot. But if it does, I will start carrying it around.

Depending on how much Neat Video you are applying, it can slow things down. Vegas on my system does not hog all of the CPU, so what you are seeing is probably a bit of CPU throttling by the OS to keep things running cool, plus Windows leaving something in reserve. I have only seen my CPU hit close to 100% when I have been running 3 renders simultaneously

My system specs: Intel i7 970, 12GB RAM, ASUS P6T, Vegas Pro 12 (x64), Windows 7 x64 Ultimate, Vegas Production Assistant 1.0, VASST Ultimate S Pro 4.1, Neat Video Pro 2.6
