  • Can I slow down playback while I call shots in multicam mode?

Posted by Scott Simpson on January 3, 2014 at 4:50 pm

I’m working on a busy, action-heavy show with up to six cameras rolling at any given point. I’ve done a first pass edit my usual way, by cutting the best video from each camera and stacking the timelines in order of preference. Usually works great for me, but it’s turning out very choppy and feeling disjointed.

I’d like to use the multicam tools, but I’ve never been great at calling shots on the fly. I wonder if I’d be able to slow playback to, say, half-speed and go multicam from there. It would give me a bit more time to peek at the shots and reach for the buttons.

    Possible?

Yup, the Play Back Rate. Just drag left or right:

Good to know. I’ll give it a try! My memory must be fuzzy — I thought when I’d used that slider before, it would slide back to normal once you let go. Good to know I can lock it while going through.

Scott, you are correct – I was wrong. We need to Right Click on that PINK triangle and select a “lockable” rate.

    My apologies.

When I need to multi-cam the material with lots of action (like a stage dance or a show-fight), I find it most productive to just press and hold the Right-arrow key. Preview starts with frame-by-frame, but immediately goes up to its real-time speed.
If I press and hold Alt+Right arrow, Vegas attempts to playback at its maximum, going faster than the real-time – if the hardware allows.
I use my other hand to switch between cameras, but I have the advantage to release the arrow key and freeze the playback at any time, or even go back before I hit the camera switch.

I’m on Vegas Pro 11 (64 bit), as I find the current state of the 12 still too fussy. But I believe it should work the same.
