Dreaded “Black Preview” Problem – Tried Lots of Things
Hi All,
I’m having the dreaded “black preview screen” problem with some files. I’ve been researching and reading and watching “solutions” to this including disabling graphics card on preview, mute all video, etc. and nothing is working for me so far. My symptoms are a bit different so I thought I’d post and hope someone can assist.
First of all – haven’t had this problem before in any of my editing I remember. These files are from an iPhone and are 21Mbps Quicktime MPEG-4 AVC files using avc1 codec. Here’s the thing … If I start a new project and drag them in, at first everything is fine … previews just fine. I’ve been dragging 5-10 files at a time to the timeline.
At some point, usually about 30 files in or so … the import/drag will seem to “hang” and spin its wheels for a long time. Eventually spinning cursor stops and all looks normal except … BAM …. preview goes black. Audio still plays fine. Nothing I do at that point seems to fix it to get preview back. If I open a new project and drag the files in, it’s fine again for awhile until I hit that point.
Any ideas for me? I’ve had trouble in the past (different trouble) with Apple files of a high (>12 or 15) bit rate. I’m tempted just to convert them all to get the project done, but this is rather maddening. Any help much appreciated!

More Info ……
- I’ve determined that it is NOT a particular file causing the problem.
- Sometimes I can drag in a bunch of the files/clips and most will preview but a few at the end will be black, as a click around on the timeline, eventually none of them will preview – this is with changing NOTHING … just playing at different points in timeline.
- Sometimes the audio goes away too, but usually comes back.
- At least once, a project that was “black” opened up and previewed for a little bit before going black again .

That’s why….Is this Vegas 12?
OK – but 3 questions ….1- why will it preview for awhile and then stop?
2 – like it or not, the iPhone video is probably the single most popular video format in the world. Why would Vegas not support it?
3 – How do i get around this? I converted all the files to mp4 last night, I’ll have to see if that works for me. Any other ideas? I’d rather support it natively somehow without having to convert.

I, too, have experienced this very problem. SVP works with a small number of iPhone files, but give it a large number and the preview disappears. Unfortunately, my problem was not resolved using Vegas. I imported the files into another video editor and rendered out the files from that program and then reimported them as single video file into Vegas.
