Recommended PC/specs for Vegas 12?
I’m guessing this is probably a question that gets asked a lot around here, yet surprisingly nothing came up when I search.
My budget is around £500 (£700 max), I’m looking for say the cheapest I’d be able to run vegas “well” on. My PC at the moment lags heavily and often freezes, when I’m trying to playback the preview, on Vegas 9 (even when its a raw clip, with only 1 video & audio track), though it is a low end desktop.
I generally import and render videos in 720p (sometimes 1080p, though morelikely 1080p in the future), and my videos are short films, never >10 mins long, and generally a few minutes long. I generally use 2 audio tracks (max 3), and 1/2 video tracks, and the odd transition now and then, but I’m not heavy on the video FX.
I’m not too fussed about rendering times, I’m happy to leave my PC rendering while I go do something else, or over night if its a long render. Though obviously, the quicker the better.
I’ve only ever bought pre-built PCs before, never built my own. Though I am willing to try building my own as I’ve heard its cheaper (provided its not too complicated).
So in essencse, I’m looking for a PC that I’m able to edit on smoothlty.
Also Intel V AMD? If I buy a high end AMD will it run Vegas or do I have to dig deep in my pockets and get Intel?

Vegas 9 is old and woefully inadequate to handle modern video formats. Before you buy any hardware, I would download the trial of Vegas Pro 12.0. It handles modern video formats much easier than 9 did on the same hardware. You might not need a hardware upgrade at all.
If you really want a new PC, I would look at Videoguys,comm DIY9 or DIY10. Even if you don’t build it yourself, you can see the specs to look for. I built the DIY 9 Hot Rod and Vegas Pro 12.0 runs great on it.
Overall I would consider an Intel Core i7 4-core with 8GB of memory minimum. If you can go for a Core i7 6-core with 16GB of memory even better. The more CPU power the better off you’ll be. Two hard drives minimum (one boot and one video data). Graphics cards don’t seem to make much of a difference with Vegas Pro so if you are going to skimp any place, that would be the logical place to cut.

You’re much better off using an Intel processor. Don’t be fooled by comparing basic on-die specs (clock speed, cache, etc) and saying to yourself “The comparable AMD is so much cheaper!” because you’re not going to get the same performance in regards to video editing.
I highly recommend what John stated above. Put as much money as you can into the CPU and branch out from there.

Thanks for your help John & Dave. Unfortunately my pc isn’t 64bit, and is unupgradeable to 64bit, so I can’t trial Vegas 12. Though from what you’re saying Vegas 12 does seem pretty good.
I’ve seen this desktop, which is in the price range, and looks pretty good. It comes with 4th gen i5 processor (is this good enough, or do I need i7?), quad-core with 8Gb RAM (https://www.johnlewis.com/lenovo-ideacentre-k450-desktop-pc-intel-core-i5-8gb-ram-2tb-8gb-sshd-silver-black/p839151).
On the topic of processors, is there some hidden stat that determines has “good” it is? I’ve seen one of the most expensive processors out there is only 2GHz clock speed.
