Hi folks,
I have 1080p footage from which I need to create a DVD.1. Which project property do you recommend I use?
and…
2.which render template do I use when I’m ready to reader the mpg2 for DVDA?

I always recommend that you use the properties of your source video unless you know that you will be delivering in a different aspect ratio, in which case you should set your project to match the aspect of your delivery format. In your case these are almost the same.

Use one of the DVD Architect templates under MainConcept MPEG-2. Which template you use depends on the frame rate of your source which would have told us nothing about.

1. would it make sense to use “NTSC DV Widescreen (720×480, 29.970 fps)” as this would allow me to crop the images a bit without losing definition?
2. my footage was recorded in avchd 1080 30 fps.
3. is 1080p the same ratio as DVD (not blue-ray)??? and is it the same as 720×480?

Yes, if you shot NTSC footage at 30fps, that would be the template.

Not exactly. If you do the math you’ll find that DVD Widescreen has a slightly wider aspect than HD. This will cause slight black bars on either side of your video which probably won’t even be noticeable on a TV.

Thanks again John. Yes I did notice the black bands.
so if i understand correctly, this is normal and there is no way to avoid these when going from HD to DVD?

Yes, it is normal and there are two ways to avoid it:
1. When you render, there is a checkbox that says “Stretch video (do not letterbox)”. That will stretch the video to eliminate the black bars. Your video will become a little soft because of the stretching. If the black bars bother you more than having soft video then that is one approach.
2. Drop your HD project into a 720×480 Widescreen project and Crop the event that it makes to fit the DVD Widescreen aspect. This avoids stretching because it’s cropping but it’s also zooming so the video once again gets a little soft.
You might try both of these technologies and see if the results are acceptable to you. Personally, I can’t see the black bards because my HD TV overscans a bit and hides them so they don’t bother me.

John, you just answered a question I have been trying to solve for years! People have noticed my output was not as crisp as they were expecting, and I have been trying to determine why.
I think I have posted several times on this forum seeking an answer.
I’ll deselect the stretch setting and do a comparison now. Thanks!

Let us know what you think. That may have been the cause. The black bars are really not noticeable on a TV because even HD TV’s still over scan (at least both of mine do).
