  • rendering in Ultra-wide screen sizes

    Hi,

    I am trying to render a project in 3640 x 1080.

I have set my project settings to Custom(3640×1080;25fps)

To test rendering options I am only using three 1920×1080 stills which I have spread out with track motion to fill the preview screen. These show up correctly in the ultra-wide preview screen.

I have then gone through all possible rendering combinations that offer 1080p HD quality and up.

If I try MainConcept AVC/AAC — Blu-ray 1920×1080 and customized the frame size to 3640×1080. I get an error immediately upon the start of rendering: “An error occurred while creating the media file … the reason for the error could not be determined”

Other output formats such as MainConcept MPEG-2 and DNxHD will not allow me a custom width wider than 2048. If i enter the 3640 value it jumps back to 2048 when I move from the entry field.

Even though my project settings are set to Custom(3640×1080;25fps), choosing the “Use project settings” alternative for Frame Size does not result in an Ultra-wide render.

I need to deliver in one weeks time. Can anyone help?

Why not try the Sony AVC format?

Try rendering with Video For Windows and start with the HD 1080-50i YUV template, press the Customize Template button and under Frame size select: (Use project settings) and set the Field Order to None (progressive scan). That will get you a 3640×1080-25p file.

Note: The file will be huge because Sony YUV is a high quality intermediary codec.

Thanks for answering, Steve. But if I chose for example – AVCHD 1920×1080-50i I cant see how to modify the template to accommodate the 3460 x 1080p that I am wishing to do.

There doesn’t seem to be an alternative for defining my own screen/frame size.

Thank you John. That did work. And you were right about the hugeness – 10 seconds used 2 gigs and my film is 6 minutes long so that will mean a 36 gig file.

I will send a 2 second render to the people who run the Barco Folsom Encore at the venue and see what they say.

But when you add that the Sony YUV is an intermediate codec, do you suggest that I try to move my 36 gig file over to some other format after rendering? Or is there another hi-quality codec that would give a smaller file?

Dont choose the AVCHD video format in the the Sony AVC template,
you cant customize that… Choose instead the AVC video format
and you will also end up with a much smaller file size if you choose.

    Thanks again, Steve

I think I did as you suggested.

in the Sony AVC/MVC template I chose plain AVC as the video format
Audio: 128 Kbps; 48 000 Hz; 32 Bit; Stereo; AAC
Video: 25 fps; 3640×1080 Progressive; YUV; 16 Mbps
    Pixel Aspect Ratio: 1,000

I tried this with both the “allow source to adjust frame size” selected and deselected but I got the error in both cases. “an invalid argument was specified”

I tried the render in 1920×1080 and there was no error – except of course 1920×1080 is not what I want:-)

What could I be doing wrong?

Yes, exactly! If you can’t find a smaller format to render to in Vegas Pro, you can use the Sony YUV file in any encoder of your choice to try and make it smaller. I would ask the people who run the Barco Folsom Encore what codec people usually give them. Then use that.

BTW, they probably won’t be able to read a Sony YUV file unless they have the codec installed and I don’t know of any way to get that without having Vegas Pro so you might not want to send them a file just yet. Find out what they are using first and encode to that.

    Once again thanks for replying.

Do you have any idea why I get the error messages when trying Steve’s suggestion to use AVC?

I just did a render of 4.30 minutes and it is 51 gig!!!

glad you told me not to bother sending it to the venue people.

Would you suggest an encoder? I downloaded Adobe Media Encoder – is that a good choice?

No, but I’ve been playing with this some more and I got MainConcept AVC to work. I started with the Internet HD 1080p template and changed the Frame size to custom and the width to 3640 and it rendered fine.

My gosh. what da ya know it worked!

I only tried a little demo so it will be exciting to see what happens when I render my big project tonight.

I can only hope I have been as helpful to others in my skill’s domain as you have been to me in yours:-)
