  Cleaning up noisy audio in Sony Vegas Pro 12 Edit Version

  Hello all.

  First, a thank you to those who have helped me in the past in this forum.

  I am editing a feature film in Sony Vegas Pro 12 Edit Version (meaning it didn’t come with DVD Authorizing software, but I already have an older verion of Sony DVD Architect that I’m happy with.)

  Some of the footage I’ve shot were in noisy places and I coulnd’t necessarily do anything about it.

  Example: We shot in a restaurant. While some things could be turned off, others couldn’t legally because of health code (i.e. refrigerator, AC, etc.)

  I want to remove, or at least deaden, this kind of background noise.

  I’m a rookie at adjusting audio (can do envelopes just fine and have been, but not all that strong when fixing audio.)

  While I can eliminate audio background noise with Audacity, it strips away the quality of the dialouge, which I can’t have.

  I have access to Sound Forge Studio 10 as well.

  Can someone recommend audio software/Sony Vegas plugins, what have you, as well as finding tutorials for resolving the noise issues?

  I don’t want to ask for step-by-step help here, that’s a bit much, and I’m happy to learn how to do it myself.

  Unfortunately, I haven’t found much online to resolve my issues except for Audacity tutorials.

  Audacity is good. Look up Bill Meyers’ YouTube video on how to use it with Vegas. And it’s free.

  I’ve started to rely more on Track EQ and bring up 1 a little to the right on the graph and bring down 4 a little to the left. It worked great when I shot video that had audio coming straight from the t3i with a videomic that has lots of hum.

  Izotope RX is the best in removing audio noise, but its
  a rather expensive, But you also have Sony Noise Reduction Plugin,
  which is less expensive and give good results.
  But if strapped for cash, then proper use of Audacity will get
  you good results also.

  Thanks for the tip about Izotope RX2.

  I was pulling my hair out trying to fix audio with Audacity and not degrade the mics of the actors.

  Using Izotope RX2 standard, not even the pro version, I was able to quickly do what is normally done in Audacity by going through the same process with a minor adjustment to the defaults, and the noise was removed, but maintained the quality of the mics on the actors.

  Glad it helped. Izotope RX is the absolute best.
  Every serious media content creator should have this
  software in their toolset.
