PC rebuild
Posted by Richard Milner on July 22, 2013 at 7:14 pmI know Mac’s are the way to go in video industry but I am a PC reseller and I have come close to having a good video editing machine with the PC I have now, but…
I need to build a new one. I need recommendations. I have had people tell me that if I built a machine for a hardcore gamer it would be good enough but I am not convinced of that. So instead of going to guys around here that know how to build high end gaming machines I am coming to this place so that I can learn from the ones who use them everyday.
I am going SSD for editing drive and OS, but storage will be on regular SATA drives. Quad core or more for faster rendering. As much ram as the OS can handle. Fastest CPU. What else?
Grace and Peace!

Says who? Oh, yes, Mac owners.
In Vegas the most bang for the buck is in processor power, followed by RAM, which is comparatively cheap so it makes sense to load up on it. Use an SSD for the O/S and programs, but move your Documents, Downloads, Pictures and Music folders to the spinning disk.
Unless you plan on editing 4K files, you do not need RAID.

July 23, 2013 at 4:28 ammany people have moved away from the MAC since the the Mac pro updates have been long in the tooth and the new form factor is not expandable.
like the other post said…. the most cores and fastest CPU you can afford. At this point GPU acceleration is not implemented well and is hit or miss
8 core CPU with Hyperthreading or 2 physical CPUs with 4 cores and hyper threading would be the best way to go

July 23, 2013 at 11:30 amRichard, check out the DIY section on the Videoguys web site for their latest machine build. They give you a number of options to build a machine that would fly when using Vegas. One caution is to make sure you get the right video card. John Rofrano on here uses a Quadro 4000 instead of GTX 500 series card. Check his site for his machine specs.

July 23, 2013 at 2:42 pmI’m kind of shocked that you’re asking these questions since you are a system reseller. You should know hardware like the back of your hand!
Telling you what hardware to install is next to impossible without knowing what the budget is. However, here are some basics that all system sellers/builders should adhere to, in regards to workstations:
Install the fastest CPU the budget permits. Intel Xeon is probably overkill nowadays, so go with the Intel IvyBride i7 processor.
16gb is probably the minimum RAM
It’s not a true WORKSTATION if it doesn’t have a Quadro 4000 video card.
SSD system drive (128gb minimum), 7200rpm 6gb/s SATA hard drive as system drive.
Motherboard should have, at the MINIMUM, two 6gb/s SATA ports. If you’re going to stripe some fast hard drives together for video storage, you’ll want to make sure the mobo has four 6gb/s SATA ports.Dave

July 23, 2013 at 3:15 pmRichard, when the Rendertest was popular a couple of years ago, the PC’s with dual Xeon processors left most others in the dust.

July 23, 2013 at 6:14 pmAs shocking as it is about being a system rebuilder of which I am, I don’t or nor never built a machine for video proficiency. Mine are mainly work computers for businesses. The consumer computers are going to Dell and those people as we can’t compete with them. So I don’t have a clue how to build a computer for video editing.
The last computer I built for video editing was a computer I built for my office and it worked with Vegas.

July 29, 2013 at 3:20 pmDavid,
In my rendering computer, I have twin hexa-core Xeons, along with 48 GB of triple channel DDR3 (7-7-7-20) RAM. My video card is a 3GB GTX-580, which I don’t use because render using GPU always crashes, and besides with 24 hyper-threaded cores the CPU wins. My system drive is an SSD, my swap drive is an SSD, and my source is a 4TB stripped raid, my output is a 1TB single drive. All drives are SATA-III 6.0Gb/s.
Can you explain why I’m getting 22-26% processor usage when rendering with the Sony AVC codec?
I have researched over and over and rebuilt this system a few times. I don’t have a bottleneck and both CPU’s are water cooled and seldom go over 42C. I just don’t get it!
